A tangent from the preparedness thread.

What are the pros and cons of breakers vs. fuses. On the surface I'd think breakers would be the obvious choice, but so many cars are running relocated fuse boxes and still running fuses.

Pluses, minuses??

I'd have thought breakers would be fairly high up the order of preparation but that isn't borne out by observation. what I see.

OK, I thought this might make for an interesting discussion - provided it doesn't get pushed off the rails by stupidity. Lets give peace a chance shall we.

I think most people prepare their cars to a certain level and carry 'common' spares with them - but I've seen a few things lately that make me wonder exactly how 'common' spares are defined.

What do you carry as spares in the car and how prepared are you to deal with mechanical problems on stage or transits. What redundant systems do you have on-board.
There are obvious ones: Spare tire, spare fluids, accessory belts, cable ties, duct tape. How many have a spare intercom in the car? Spare map-lights built into the car?

In another thread John suggested a spare throttle cable that was pre-installed in the car, ready for a quick swap as needed. Is that overkill? Have we seen enough throttle cables broken to suggest this is a prudent idea or can broken throttle cables be an indication of a problem with preparation. (IE: not adjusting the 'stop' for teh throttle pedal once the carpet etc. have been removed, giving more throw at the end of travel and thus stressing the cable more - really, they don't fail regularly road use do they?)

I guess what I'm saying is that if you're carrying spares, or have redundant systems, then there is an expectation the part or system might fail. Isn't the first step, then, to look at the failures and try and prevent them.

Before anyone gets their knickers in a bunch - I am in no way pointing fingers or calling out anyone's work on this. I don't have a hidden agenda and I'm not trying to start a war.

Ok so Im going to kill 2 birds with 1 thread.

Took the race car to work today and got her up on the alignment rack to see how goobered everything got with the new suspenders.

I set ride height, and then evened out all the settings. This leads me to my first question. What are generally good settings for a gravel car. I know how to set up a car for tarmac, but I dont know enough about how different settings will effect things.

Currently the front camber is -.5 per side. This is maxxed, unless I space the wheel away from knuckle. The tire contacts the spring with more room to spare at the bottom of the damper. I would like more.

Front toe is .05 out per side, .1 total. Just a little for decent turn in, without making it to squirly as speeds increase.

Lots of caster (5.8) Maxed out.

Rear camber -1.5 per side. Current max, need new upper arms.

.05 toe in per side .1 total. Should help with stability while also allowing me to put the throttle down harder without over rotating the rear end.

So, how far off am I?

And my second question, E85. I have the ability to run dual fuel/ignition tables. Id like to be able to switch between straight fuel, and ethanol. My only wonder is the rule in the RA book stating that event organizer must be notified if you are using alternative fuels. Does this rule pertain to E85, or is it more aimed at CNG/LP and the like?

Oh hai, look, pictures.

New fancy super bitchin suspenders. Ride height needed some tweaking.

This was the seat Gene has talked so great about. I would love to keep this but the combo of the wings, the huge bucket I call a helmet, the long torso I was "blessed" with and the tiny little car I wanted it to work in, I have to go with something with out wings.

The seat has zero rally's on it. Just some driving around. It's still in super shape, only thing is a small singe/burn on the side of the cover. This is entirely covered when attached to the mounts.

$540 for the seat and a set of low mount omp steel mounts.
For those that have not...

Make sure to watch all the videos. Matt has the gear to make one of the best rally documentaries ever. I wanted to donate when I first heard about it but I'm a full time student. My lunch today was Ramen noodles. I finally quit smoking because I couldn't afford it. I have a car with a temp tag that's about to expire that I can't drive anyhow because I can't afford the gasoline so I bike or scooter or bus the 13 miles across town to campus.
I just donated $100. Means I won't be able to do emissions testing or get plates or fix the door on my daily driver, but next year when I'm at the premiere for this, I won't even remember what I sacrificed.
What's your excuse for not donating? Donate now and I'll see you at the premiere and after-party!

Side note: I went to the Art of Flight premiere in Jackson, WY. Hometown of Brain Farm and Travis Rice so it was a pretty big deal. The afterparty was one of the highlights though. You don't want to be a lame-o and miss out on the biggest party and best film in rallying history since Climb to the Clouds. You definitely won't want to miss the premiere or the afterparty. Donate at least $81 and come join us!

My partner in crime was wrenching on the car, removing my suspension and sheared a stud clean off of my fairly new GrpN tophats. Was curious if anyone had a line on getting replacement studs?
Looking to avoid using bolts so that it actually stays put without having to shove a bolt through it from underneath. Not the greatest thing when trying to swap something in a pinch.
Thanks,
I don't have the room to keep and work on her, so she has to go. Pristine interior, exterior needs a paintjob, currently running on only two cylinders, definitely a rebuild. I just moved from a location with a garage to a location without one, so I just don't have the space for her or I'd do it myself. $800 OBO, if your interested, shoot me an offer. I'd like to see her go to someone who's willing to give her the love she deserves. only 110xxx miles on this little 2.3 I4 cylinder engine. Definitely a diamond if you want to put the work into her.

Curious as to what everyone does?

Obviously, it really wouldn't hurt to do it every rally, but the cheapass in my says that with modern day synthetics, it really shouldn't be necessary. We drive our cars flat out for typically less than 20 minutes at a time, I'd think a day of time attack would be just as hard on a car and lord knows I sure didn't change my STi's oil that often (went with the severe service interval, which is like 3k miles or 5k kms on synthetic).

I was thinking about going with an "every second rally" interval. Seem reasonable? Should I change the filter and just top up a bit?

I had heard from someone (I am not naming names to protect the innocent) that I could put RX7 Front brake calipers on my XR for better brakes. I have an oval asphalt track race car and the wheel size we are limited to is a 13" wheel. The stock brakes leave a lot to be desired...along with the limited selection of good race pads. I have upgraded the rears to discs, but when trying to fit the RX7 calipers onto the XR rotor and spindle, pushing the cliper down on the rotor, by the time the caliper hits the mounting tabs for the caliper (I will have to build an adapter bracket) the pad is still not all the way on the rotor-its about 1/8" to 1/4" hanging over.

Has anyone actually done this? Is the pad not being fully on the rotor going to cause problems or cause the stopping issues not to really be resolved. The RX7 aluminum 4 piston calipers look very trick, but ultimately it is about stopping and possibly shaving some weight.
Hans was the first out of the gate, was asked to make the "rules" with SFI (FIA as well?) The design is eligant from an engineering point of view.

Hybrid stuff seems like its designed by a group that also produces S&M devices. Sure they claim to be better in every aspect. Coke and Pepsi come to mind when I think of the two sides trying to argue who is better. As of the last week two seperate topics on SS have been posted about how they are the next best thing since DOHC or AL.

All right, I'm posting this as a bored injurneer looking to unnerstand something, not as a guy looking for advice on what to do for his first rally car or such. So if we could skip all the exhortations to just do something stock and get on stage - 'cause, I know that's a good sentiment, but I can't really get on stage while I'm at work. ;)

Hokay. So what works and why? I know on this gravel crap there's not much grip compared to tarmac, so not much body roll, and not much camber change, but it's not zero, but aside from purpose built things (RS200, McRae R4, etc) double wishbones seem to not work. Why? Just wheel travel? Similarly, Subaru in the last gasps of the factory WRC thingie seem to have gone from multi link rear to struts - same damn thing?

Trailing arms seem to work, strut rears seem to work, live axles seem to work (though maybe not as well?) so does it just get to a kind of thing that it doesn't matter so long as it can move?

For sale need it gone by this weekend. New Clutch, PP, resurfaced LH2.4 flywheel and a fresh M47, new tires (90%) car runs amazingly well, I would not hesitate to take it cross country, probably put about 20-30k on it since i purchased it. I upgraded the car to 87 240 electronics. basically, lh2.2 and chrysler box. idles rock steady at 800rpm and fires right up without hesitation. has a exhaust leak at the o2 sensor, the old one was cross threaded in there and wiped out the threads, have newer manifold included with the car. Will deliver the car within 200 miles of monterey this weekend for my asking price
