Just getting started
December 15, 2014 01:09AM
I'm new to rally so I'm sure I will earn some flamage. Any ways did some rally cross and thought like everyone else it would be so cool to actually rally. I found a 93 MX-3 for right about 500 bucks and thought what the heck, if nothing else I'll have a car to keep running rally cross.

Pretty much I'm hear hoping that some one here has run or is running an MX-3. I've heard of one guy so far but I'm not sure if he is still doing it or not. Here's to hoping some one knows the guy/s running the mx-3 and getting on stage eventually.

honestly i can't recall anyone running an Mx-3, however, it would work for rallycross since 90% of rallycross is a running car.

I'm pretty sure there's been a MX-3 run at 100 acre wood. 4-5 years ago They backed it into the woods and that big back glass when buh-bye smiling smiley.

Mazda sends out checks, so there's reason enuff to play around with it.

Welcome.

James Haas runs/ran an MX-3 in stage rally, and I used to rally-x one. I'm not sure what James' setup was, but for my 93 w/ the 4-cyl engine, I swapped in the 1.8BP engine from a Ford Escort GT. I was planning on eventually turning it into a rally car, but ultimately realized that there would be a lot of problem solving ahead of me that I wasn't prepared to do, so I decided to buy a pre-built rally car.

I think that the car would certainly be capable of being a decent car and that the experiences of those that ran Mazda GTX's and Ford Escort GT's in the past would help in the build process. I found the MX-3 to be pretty solid and competitive in my local rally-x series, plus it was a lot of fun. I say rally-x it for now and take some time to figure out what you want to do and what the best way is to get there.

Thanks for the welcome guys. I have gotten a hold of Dan and it sounds like its going to be a challenge. But with as cheap as the car was and its already running its worth a go to build it up and learn and such then decide down the line if the cage is going in and the car is going to see a stage.

If you are just aiming at rallycross, cheap and light is better.
There's probably nothing special about the car to build into a stage rally car. With your location you will likely be looking at potentially rougher stages than other parts of the country so a flimsier car that nothing is known about isn't totally ideal. I'd say go rallycross it and start thinking about something better suited to stages. smiling smiley

Yeah, James Haas' car is done and gone. Good luck rallying.

Low roof cars can be a challenge to get proper clearance between your head and the roll cage (factor in the thickness of the required padding). If you're short this may not be a problem at all. I'm about 6' and my experience in 1st gen DSMs sucked. The one I sat in required me to have my head tilted 10-20 degrees or so and was always banging off the cage, and it wasn't for lack of trying. The trans tunnel had been notched, the seat moved inwards about 2" more than stock, and mounted as low as it could go.

@dave I'm only 5'6 so hopefully everything fits should I put a cage in. The more I look at it the more I'm leaning towards learning what I can with this car and having fun with it, but when it comes time to really go for rally look for something thats done regularly with plenty of info out there for the build.

Don't forget that (should you ultimately decide to stage rally the car), just because you may fit fine in there, doesn't mean prospective co-drivers will fit fine.

I was thinking I might be able to do something like the top gear electric car if I need extra head room.
