Lots of rally this weekend... what happened

Sandblast was this weekend and a couple test day deals somewhere. Feed us poor souls with stories!

Sandblast was brutal this year. A combination of rainfollowed by cool weather prior to event and 100+ entries did the roads no good. I believe 20 cars DNFed, a bunch that didn't limped thru.
Greenhouse put on a clinic and finished 2nd OA in his srt Neon.

ha ha, its a common term in the ski industry. I'm sure it is in many others as well.

Common term in the off road motorcikkle circles I race in as well. The type of riders you love to hate and strive to keep up with them for more than 2 turns, just to watch them ride haha.

Word on the street:

if Ozgur's in the car, the engine's gonna blow.
if Danny's in the car, the electrics will die.
if I'm in the car, the clutch will fail.


In other news, pouring Coke on the clutch actually works. For a while.

I did a rallysprint in my old GTX, with brand new fancybutt kevlar clutch. This is a foreshadowing hint. Far too many guilty parties here will recognize this story. In my ignorance of the ways of fancybutt kevlar clutches, I did not break said fancybutt kevlar clutch in for the 500 or whatever miles you're supposed to. Wished someone woulda filled me in on that.. When it started slipping, it did so with ferocity... to the point of "golly we may need a tow off the course". At service, someone--- I'm not gonna name names-- Dave Clark-- came up with a brilliant solution. We drained the windshield washerfluid tank, rerouted the hose to the bellhousing, and refilled with Dr. Pepper.. When it started to slip again, I just hit the washer control on the stalk. Like KERS or push-to-pass, except it was more of a push-to-merely-proceed button. It got us through the rest of the event, but I gotta tell ya, the mess in that bellhousing was a gold plated pita to clean up!

Jay, we talked about doing just exactly that at one point. However, we made it just by re-Coking it before every stage and transit.

I am thankful that a) I got a chance to try it out and see how it works in practice and have the fun story to tell, and b) it's not my car so I don't have to clean up the mess.

I had a ton of fun at Sandblast. Got to do course set up for 3 stages. worked stage 1 and 6. Did the arrow changing in between as well. That was fun, since we have to punch it half way thru. Did course clean up. 40 of 45 bikes finished stage 6. 29 of 45 cars started stage 6, i heard the 2 got stuck but eventually finished. going thru afterwards, nasty stuff.

Had a good time at sandblast. Worked stage 4.

Before even reaching stage start, two volunteer's got stuck. Apparently there are situations in which a Chevy Aveo is a better choice than a Mini or a Miata. Thankfully we had a discovery with us, who had a tow strap and we were able to get them out... only to have to push the Miata out again a few tenths later.

Another volunteer got stuck near the finish and the stage captain had to go back and pull them out.

Things got hectic with running the bike's on 30 second intervals. We could've really used an additional person on start, as I was trying to do timecards and radio at the same time.

Everything got considerably less stressful for the cars.

This brings up a question. How do YOU run an arrival/start control? In all the years I've done this, I had always given the arrival time at the arrival control, and assigned the start time at the start (I think I learned/picked this up from Paul Jaeger)... The idea being that it usually changes between arrival and start anyways. This was definitely less than ideal for 30 second intervals... at least with bikes. They didn't leave their cards out, and it was a scramble to get their cards out, write the time, and get them moving. Maybe had we just asked the guy at arrival to ask them to keep their cards handy, it would've been better.

Overall the nooks worked well. There was some confusion at one point, where our captain recorded some extra start times, but I think that was user error (writing on a time card, using the nook as the flat surface)...

After stage 4, I ran over to stage 6 and filled in as spectator radio. Then went over to stage 7 to catch the cars on the last stage. Good times were had, definitely looking forward to next year.

yeah. ill plus 1 on the bikes being hectic. Start of stage 1, all hell broke loose. But stage 6 everyone knew where they were and were pretty orderly. Stage 1 I was doing ATC by myself. Had a helper for stage 6.
