Guess trubo 4wd $300K car is just barely enough
May 11, 2015 12:31AM
Yet another WRC driver does what many current guys have done when not in their Dubya Aresey cars: run a nice simple well done 2wd RWD car, again a Group 4 Escort...

Shows what a driver can do when they know how to drive.

A few stages in, somebody's crew can't keep the Hoonmobile going, but Paddon goes into the OVERALL LEAD in his non-turbo RWD car:
http://www.chrissport.co.nz/results/2015/otago/ss4.htm

Lots of misadventures for the "Top" cars, 'a senor failed" bless his heart and no FWD cars anywhere in sight, but 2 ancient RWD Fords and a old RX7 in the top ten OVERALL,

Then on the last SS, Paddon wins Overall...

Maybe those turbo 4wd cars are too complicated to keep going regardless of all the money spent?

Maybe some people claiming to know it all and "Done it all, and FWD is the best for learning rally" are just flat full of shit...seems first FWD in around 24th place...

Only one Fiesta--DNF after TS3

What ever, people gonna talk shit but who cares, this is the way to do it:

Paddon on the way to 1st Overall NZRC

That's the way you do it...

Yep like this:

Maybe people would be better off following what all these WRC type guys do in their spare time....

Interesting - van Klink is driving a Group B replica, and Alistair McRae was piloting the other Escort. Wish I'd been there.

Awesome stuff!
John's absolutely right when he says it shows what a driver can do when they know how to drive.
So... as I look at getting into the sport, does that mean the following path is best?
- Rally School for fundamentals
- Get a cheap, built car, and don't stress about spec, just make sure its reliable and get to events.
- Seat time
- More seat time
- Advanced Rally School
- More seat time
- Even more seat time
- periodic coaching or advanced schools to 'touch-up'

Clearly knowing HOW to drive is key.

You know, I saw the words 'Paddon', 'Escort', and 'first overall' on something the other day and just assumed it was a historics race or whatever. But holy hell, That's excellent. I wonder how many zeros are before the 'K' on that one!

I don't think starting with a rally school is necessary, I would put it 3rd. Sure you may pick up some bad habits in the first couple of rallies. But you will learn how to rally. Like how to get to the stages, how to prep the car, how to setup a service, etc, etc.

And then you can focus all of your energy on being a better driver.

Awesome stuff for sure!

I love love love when 2wd beats AWD!

Yes apparently the kid can drive...and do well in a RWD,(and in FWD and AWD if you read up on him a bit).

I probably have a distorted view of the MK1 and MK2 escorts, because all I have seen of them are pics and vids of masterful drivers who just destroy in them.

Not having them available in North America the lust factor is High for me as well.

I really like the Volvo 240 or Ford Sierra as RWD choices..but picture the RWD Escort properly
set-up as Dominating those cars with the same driver.

Again..I'm probably wrong and just glorifying the RWD Escort.

Driver>Car of course.

I just wonder if he was in a equally set-up Volvo 240, Sierra, or for that matter a FWD Fiesta or AWD EVO if his outcome would be different.....

Odd hat a small handful of people say I'm "trolling for shit".
Odd that those few are grouped in a handful of scattered locations..

Odd that the post that followed your the guy draws a completely different conclusion...

Then again he's further down the road in the woods than a number of people who say I'm trolling.

And above all shit talking can take many forms, including just repeating what everybody around you is saying to fit in with what you think is the group....it can be shit even when it is couched in the politest of forms...

When there is a 80-20 or 75-25 split between those who read the exact same words and see encouragement and helpful suggestions on ways to approach this expensive pastime and those who---despite having extremely limited experience, and know nothing of the rest of the world---say I know nothing and am a big asshole and troll,

you have to wonder how the same words on some screen can engender such diametrically opposed conclusions...

This ain't the thread to discuss your very good questions, tho..why not add it to your other thread...they are good questions....

I will just say this tho----that guy, in that car is the exact opposite of what you will be "taught" at any school in this continent...And same for Alister McRae in the other Escort and the guy in the RX7
You will be "taught" that:
*FWD is the BEST car to learn in because it is "most like" a awd car--unstated presumption that an AWD car is the ultimate goal
* You must master LFB Left foot braking because LFB "Is indispensable" to driving a rally car
* You must "try and maintain momentum in the corners"

They are very effective at hammering these messages into peoples heads..

And all are extremely foolish things to tell beginners..

But there is an inertia and a momentum to ideas and that is "what everybody says"

And as often is the case, what everybody says is wrong.

If RWD was so awesome Ken Block would have had kept the Mustang RWD for his Gymhoonifakeagainbuffoon stuff.

RWD Escorts are awesome. This is probably not a cheap or run of the mill version either. But regardless, it's bad ass, even if it's just some random island rally somewhere. winking smiley

Just a normal Group 4 Appendix K Escort. Just like Latval and Hirvonen have, just like Vatanen and Mikkola and Waldegard, and Roger Clark and hundreds of others..

Well known recipe....and those guys are stuck with Appendix K...must be all period correct.

Oh bollocks we all know that FWD cars are the bestest 2WD cars around. It goes without saying. I mean look at all of the Team O'Neil Siestas. They can't be wrong.

Aaaaww shit I done forgot-ed-ed... And all the big first name or intial guys have spoken and that guy said "I've done it all, so I know..Front Wheel Drive is the BEST"

And EVERYBODY on EVERY 'Merikun forum all repeat in near unison..

Maybe it was just some sorta magic that only Gp4 Escorts have of all cars in the whole world?
Something "unique" in their design...something ironic! That's it!
The combination or balance of unique and ironic...

Maybe the whole Awl Squeal Drive thing is a huge crutch for people who simply cannot drive worth a shit without all the "driver's aides".

It has always seemed that way to me but as one guy said "You don't know anything, you never did anything" so couldn't be that.

Good now you're getting it. I have never read that RWD cars were better than FWD cars on the internet. However I have read the opposite. If it's on the internet then it has to be true.

Oh Noez! Who ever said that? Dey Liarz.. ALL the ex-spurts say without qualification that FRONT wheel drive is the best-est cause it is "like" AWD....And they're heroes---and their results are on the Intra-webs so they have proof---unlike some who never did anything.

Like me.
