Radium Rally

Seems like a good regional event. Sadly, I didn't have a chance to be there and see the cars on the stage.

$700 cad entry

Recce Saturday, Rally Sunday

101 km of stage promised, 86 delivered. (one cancelled stage thanks to dust, I hear)

27 entered, 25 started (21 in 2014, 16 in 2012, 21 in 2011, 17 in 2010, 11 in 2009, 15 in 2008,...)
several 'regulars' not on the entry list

P4wd was the best subscribed class with 9 entries
7 each for O2wd and O4wd

roughly an hour of racing time

2.4 seconds across the winner (O4WD) and second place (P4WD)
26.7 seconds across the overall podium
4.6 seconds separating the top 3 going into the last stage, P4WD, O2wd, O4wd in that order

8 dnfs,2 crashes and 5 mechanicals, and one sick co-driver

Virtual notice board on the website (and notices emailed out during the event)

I wish I'd had the chance to see the action, but... sounds like rally is fairly healthy in Canada right now.

Discuss!

All I can say is that Keith put on a fantastic rally, and the under powered and underrated (by some on this forum) Ranger came in a fantastic 2nd in O2wd and 11th overall on its first outing.....

Yes, it's a Ranger.
Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany.

Ahh, my idea of more fun is obviously very different than others then. seeing the faces of both competitors and spectators alike was freaking awesome. It was a good first event for the co-driver as well. So in a new truck, with a new to rally co-driver and 11th O/A is crap and devoid of fun. Huh interesting.....

Not sure why people have so much trouble following what John says.
He didn't say it was devoid of fun... just that nothing says you wouldn't have had more fun in a car.
While that's true, nothing's saying you would have had more fun in a car.
Some buddies were volunteering and described you as having a shit-eating grin all weekend. hard to imagine more fun than that.

Surely its all the volunteers and the competitors that really make 'the rally' happen isn't it?

I stand corrected, the rally wouldn't of happened without the fantastic volunteers, radio operators, the support of the town of Radium and the local Chamber of Commerce. The great competition with all the other teams was pure icing on the cake.

But John, you and I have equivocally agreed that fun can be measured by $/mile’s of smiles, no?

If I’m having a ball in the Justy, mid-back pack… and Matt P is having fun in the Ranger nearly leading the 2wd field, who cares?

If we want to swap “who’s faster stories” well then… I need to buy the beer. But we tisn’t getting rich rallyin’ here now are we?

No if I’m starting out… and I want to buy a Yari, and I might have the $ and the time to go somewhere, then maybe the vehicle is of concern… but if I’m average monkey wrench…

No?

John,
I built that "non car" in the space of 7 weeks, I used the OEM shocks and springs all with 200,000km on them. I did nothing other than fill the tank with gas the evening before the rally $56 to be precise. Oh sorry i cleaned the air filter out, it was a little dirty what with the dust and all. My idea was to go out and have a bit of fun, as it turned out a lot of fun. My result may have been because of retirements but as a famous driver once said "to finish first, first you have to finish". Do I think I can emulate the result at the next rally, who knows, who cares... What I do know is that it got a lot of non-rallycar type people interested in our sport.
This rally was a blast and I encourage all PNW/Western Canadian drivers to come out and play with us some time.
