Stage length
November 21, 2015 02:45PM
What do people (honestly) think about stage length?

For BW2016 I'm looking at an option that would bring a 40km (24 mile) long stage that would take about 40 minutes for the 'average' team to complete? (Yes, average average speed of 38mph. Max average speed of 45mph)

Having done one similar in 2006 (50km in 38 min) I know it was a workout, but absolutely worth it.

Of course there are safety concerns that come into a stage that long, but if those could be managed... what do people think?

If they can be done without risk of being scrapped for trivial issues, YES!!! Longer stages are the ultimate test. LSPR has 14 and 16 mile stages but they are fast. Ojibwe has the same, except they are tight and twisty. It is a true test to save your brakes, and keep your mental game on point. Really seperates drivers and teams.

Longer is always better -
unless there's no place for a person to pull over/spin out/ limp out.
It'd be sweet to do a long one at bigwhite, unless you were following the mis-seeded car, with a flat tire, who spun in front of you, while trying not to get stuck in a pull-out which blocked the stage.
