Testing Waters for Rally Tyres

What size and what compound tyres AT VERY COMPETITIVE PRICES you would be interrested in buying ? How many sets do you go through in one season ?

I am talking about brand new tyres, not rethreads.

If there is enough demand I can bring a few containers.

Hey Mustafa, you have the capital laying around to bring in a couple of containers, they why not team up with somebody who can bring in REALLY GOOD tires at really Good prices????
The premis is that those Finns know a bit about gravel tires (and good studded tires for the ice-race boys).

I use a lot of tires. Here is what I like and what I know:

Michilen L82 - Best all around tire in 14-62-15" size for my car. In cold events I can get away with 8 for the event. When temps get above 80F I need to have more like 12 of them for most events. This tire is the base line for the other tires I use. 25PSI Warm basically never de-bead.

Silverstone S525 15-62-15 in Med Hard Compound. This tire will last for ever, it is very hard and even in hot abrasive rallies I do not wear it out much. It is very heavy and about 3 seconds a mile slower than the L82. They last for ever so 4 is plenty for an event. 28-30 PSI warm I have not flated or de-beaded on this tire.

Silverstone S525 15-62-15 Med Soft. Good a around tire, a little better on abrasive surface than the L82 but still heavy and about 1-1.5 seconds a mile slower than the L82; but when hot they last much longer. I can make an event with 8 of these. 27PSI warm never flated or debeaded this tire.

Black Rocket BR22 - a L82 copy but heavier and softer. Good grip but can not be used in temps above 75F as the tread comes right off in like 15 miles of stage. On cold rallies this is a good tire but because of the weight I think it is about 1 second a mile slower than the L82. 27Psi a bit easier to mount than the L82 and sliverstone so I think it pays to run more air. I have never debeaded but have flated 1 or 2 of them.

I now have Falken 195-65-15's and will try them at DooWops. They are bigger then the above tires and I would rather a 185/60 or 185/65 or a 195/60. Very open tread so good in mud. So they prove that 195/65 is likely too big for my car.

So that said I like 14 or 15 62's and 195/60 or 185/60 or 185/65 sizes. I typically use 8 per event and run 4 to 5 events. I like softer tires more than hard and in hot events I would rather get 10 or 12 tires at good price then run harder compounds.

I have only ever run a set of rock hard decade old Bridgestone "softs", so I don't know squat about gravel rally tires.

My size is 175 65/70 14"

Are 175 14's still a readily available size ?

Any chance of getting some 13" tires? I still have weenie brakes with no plans of upgrading them. Like the equivalent of a 175/65/13 would be choice. Probably a medium compound if there is a choice. One set of tires 4 or 5 will last me this season, I'm slow. But having a new set of tires would be nicer than the ones that came with the car that are who knows how old.

Remember too - I've got an almost finished Black Rocket Tires website with ordering sitting on ice on my hard drive from a few years ago.....

I've got a huge stack of used 17/65-15's which may be too wide, I might go in on an order of 15/65-15 or perhaps the same as Derek, 15/62-15 ???

Didn't realize until today the fenders are going to have to be wider with my current tires & rims heehee

Your idiot body many should have hammered flat the inner lip the "rolled them as much as possible.

Sure would be nice if all the boys whjo are using those WRC-wide 17/65s would use something more correct.

You think 62's are too short or is 15/65-15 better?
"Preparing the Sierra for Motorsport" lists in cm_width/profile-16 sizes how do you convert to nice Michelin sizing?

Is this idea that someone would bare the cost of importing a shipment or is it considered to be a group buy ?

Are the various sizes for 13" and 14" wheels readily available ?

Personally I'd prefer something harder that could last a whole rally. We can't all afford a plane, island vacation home, and to burn 12 tires for a rally.

For 12 Tires; remember I am trying very hard for overall placings against turbo AWD cars so I do go a little overboard on some things. There is no reason to use this many tires today in 2wd, IF there was a limit on tires and a 2wd championship I would love to use harder longer lasting ones
