Opinion Audi TT

Has anyone here considered rallying in an Audi TT ?
Checking for a potential trainers rally car.

Somebody in Canada did a while ago...nothing memorable..

One thing to think of anytime you consider some odd:
What is the price for when you smash a fender or crack the windscreen?

Also, is there any parts that you will eventually want? What do those cost?

The Audis tend to be very expensive parts and the rare-er ones cost more...

Then there's the fundamental question: has anybody anyplace where there's serious competition ever done one?
Or do you get the fun of discovering all the weaknesses yourself?

I do realize Audi's are a bit expensive and the newer models are also a bit heavy.
I do prefer to figure out my rigs myself.

It's not meant for anything serious yet so maybe I should reconsider.

We've actually had two Audi TT's rallied in Canada, and there was an A4 in the USA afaik.

Are you talking newer or older? The old ones used the older A4's complicated double wishbone setup that was notorious for wearing quickly.

I don't know how good the older Haldex systems could be programmed for motorsports use either, I know the new ones are supposed to be WAY better with HPA's new module available.

One word that comes to mind is cramped. I used to do a bit with VW's back when MK4 Golfs/Jettas and MK1 TT's were all the rage. TT with a cage is tight!

i'm starting to think that it was just one TT, with the Nichols car from Ontario that was just sold into BC - via Alberta - being Tilston's TT that was originally a BC car. Like Bruce Wayne and Batman, I don't think the cars have ever been seen in public together.

That said, I think there was also a TT that was built in the eastern USA about the same time (2002/3?)

The big question that came with that TT was looking at the ability to get out of the car through the door window... made even more suspect now with A-pillar bars and winged seats.

Tilston's TT had custom programming for the Haldex that apparently made a world of difference... now if that programming is still in place or not... who knows.

Weight, expensive, complicated (the front suspension on the so called double wishbone things are very spindly, small little balljoints on top I wouldn't trust for anything but perfectly smooth roads. And many many joints and lots of bushings--disaster waiting to happen) and rare.

All are specific things to avoid if there is any way to do so and since you don't yet have it, avoiding these certain problems is easy..

Simple, light, strong. That is what you should look for.. And directly confirmed and available history...
There's a saying "a man learns for his mistakes" And another one is better "A smart man learns from the other guy's mistakes"..

Be smart. Make sure what you get has a good record of detailed results and available information.

Learning: since this is about rally and competition, the thing to keep fixed in the mind is the goal is to figure out how to DRIVE rally competition..
There are no prizes for fixing or overcoming design faults..

The driver is the biggest variable in the equation--or should be the biggest variable..
The car should not be. It should be a constant, something you can trust..
Experience has shown that the simpler something is the easier it is to make it reliable.

I was under the impression there were two distinct cars.

As you can see, one was rallied in 2006, the other wasn't built until 2009. Unless if others are confused, that wouldn't surprise me!

This getting older thing is difficult when I have to remember crap that happened/had gone on a decade ago. It all seems like it was yesterday haha.

Peter Reilly would probably be the man to ask about Haldex programming, wonder what happened to that car? I guess my main concern would be even with the custom programming, if the Haldex system in the "older" cars (MK4 R32 golfs, MK1 Audi TT's, 1996-2001 Audi's) was as good as say, an evo or sti center differential.

As John says, keep it simple.

What is the reason to go with a TT? If you don't have a reason to go with one over a Subaru, I think that answers the question.

I recall one running Oregon Trail somewhere in there, 03 or 04 and I wanna say it rolled and burned. No clue if it was US car though

There was one that crashed at RWV in the early 2000s that I don't see in those results. Was the first event (and last) for the car IIRC.

You got some wires crossed!

The old TT was based on the A4 chassis. Meaning, the 4th-generation Golf (/Jetta/New Beetle/a dozen other cars) They never had the multilink suspension used in Audi A4s, which were B5-up chassis.

The thing that sucks about the TT is that in order to fit gravel wheels, it looks like you'd have to get rid of the parts that make TTs special, meaning the uprights that have the ball joint position significantly lower, for a higher roll center and thus better steering response. Stick Golf uprights on it and you now have a heavy, extremely low interior space Golf.
