So I'm ready to build a car...
December 18, 2017 11:31PM
I'm leaning towards RWD, due to the fun and relative reliability. Any suggestions on platform? I know JVL will say Volvo and others will say E36. Any other ideas? I'd love to do a Merkur(and that Merkur guy is pretty close to me in Chicagoland)...But I'm open to ideas.

And yeah, I understand what it costs to build a car from scratch. I've already haemorrhaged money into drag cars in the past...This shouldn't be much different.

To be honest, build what you want to build. They have all been done before.
There will always be someone telling you it's the best thing since sliced bread, whilst the next telling you it's the biggest turd with 4 wheels.
Fuck em all, build what makes you happy and get on stage having fun. It's your car, build it your way, search out the experts for whatever car you decide on. Check the entry lists for that car and connect with the driver on FB ask them honest questions and you will get honest answers.

Yes, it's a Ranger.
Xr4Ti, it is rwd and was made in Germany.

I definitely don't disagree. Everyone has an opinion on what the "ultimate" rally car is.

Your video didn't play...But I assume it's a Volvo?

If so, I actually own a clean 1989 240 sedan right now...I've just never touched it. It's parked in a friend's lot a few miles away.

No, it was Stephen Colbert's first show with the important word "Truthiness">>
He explain the important of trust the gut and ignore books because books are elitist..

I don't care one way or the other Volvo or Xratty...
Each has their pluses and minuses..
Both in the end will probably end up with lots of the same parts..same gearbox, same diff, same shocks, same calipers, same clutch, it turbo, same turbo

Some things are simpler on the Xratty..it already has nice towers...but that is so simple even I have managed to do it....and it is standard mod for any half serious car and has been for 40 years.
Xratty steering is fine as is..Volvo's is slow at 3,4 turns....but an Xratty rack is easy to use.

Volvo 240 brakes are good size--but weird plumbing
Xratty simple plumbing but shoes in back..but there simple cheap upgrade to very good sized rear discs.

All Xratties are 2 door, most remaining 240s are 4..MOST Xratties have sunroof--easy to fill nicely, again if I can do it it must be easy..
Plenty of guys doing one or the other and who seem content so by normal standards lots of guys who know every dimension, every spec, every bolt size, component weights...everything and you can get their opinions and feelings and that's all that matters. They own the cars, who would know better than the owners???

See unlike what a lot of complete cunts like to repeat, I always say there's always 1000 ways to do anything..Actually I have been saying for whole life a slightly wrong version, I say "10,000 roads lead to Rome" and attributing it to st Paul..Its actually from middle ages and its actually "mīlle viae dūcunt hominēs per saecula Rōmam "
All kinds of ways to do things..many might be out of the question from a cost stand point, many are simply pointless, many no measurable or perceptible advantage, many done from habit, many ways out of sheer obstinacy and ignorance..
It all depends on what you want to do.
There's an old saying--every country has its version: Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Just because it seems to be a universal truth doesn't mean shit..Listen to everybody, they're all right in everything they say..

You mean a "base model"..Well I guess that guy going to see Blugg just a few miles away from him is a dumb idea...He can have yours for free.

Right?

Blugg always seems to have some cheap shells/rollers laying around. I inquired about one a couple years ago but never went and got it.

Even if he doesn't have any freebies he has mountains of other things..But he doesn't know rally..

You really want to go get the free car MattP is offering...
It's only
25 h (1,598.2 mi) via I-94 W one way and he'll tell you everything you need to know..
You'll get an honest answer..see? he emphasized that..Connect with them on FB, because owners of cars always know all the details..
3200 miles of driving is a small price to pay for sterling advice.

Although, I'm not sure what the floors/rockers look like now. I haven't looked at the car in a couple years and it's been sitting in a gravel lot.
