Underground Rallies & invite only events?

We've done similar with radio contact. Three cars, one leads at a brisk pace while the others do a slow down or stop. Flat out until you catch up to the lead car. Slow down, haul ass, etc. On roads with little to no traffic to start we found this to work well and we just trade who gets to be the lead car. If another car is coming, that's when the radio is used to slow down the back two cars.

The brisk TSD style is probably the format of choice...especially in the winter. The issue with santioning bodies is of course, if the road is posted as a 25mph, setting the CAS at 40 isn't going to happen. I know there are ways to play with pauses and such to make going 37 in a 35 pass muster, but not much more than that.

My impression is that in years past, there were more events like this run by and for rally people. They weren't outragious, top speed runs, but were fast enough to enjoy and still within the realm of how "we" drive on a day2day basis.

Brisk, gravel/winter, tsd type events without the safety sissies where the satisfaction comes from within the group...without care for sponsors, national website updates, etc

Pavement is OK with me. Talking to police and running civilians off the road isn't. Snow covered roads are great. Driving can become a challenge at very low speeds.

I was talking to an old contractor friend of mine. He had just finished a new home on my favorite practice road. I informed him of his negligence placing a driveway right at the landing zone of a 80mph jump. Then, I asked him if the new owners had kids and if the parents let them play in the road. He told me that the two kids are really short and that I should be able to clear them for at least the next two years. ;-) Another round of beers, Michaela! Maybe I should put some "Caution, dwarf children playing in road" signs?

I guess "street racing" has different implications in different parts of North America. I used to go and find adandoned or low traffic roads to play on, and when done carefully it can be done without risk of involving a third party.

Recently in Vancouver (City of about 3 million), theres been a rash of street racers hitting pedestrians other cars, etc... and quite a few fatalities. Theres been a huge crack down on street racing and the government is in the process of deporting one "Non Canadian Immigrant" back to his home country after he was racing, then hit someone, left the scene and left the person to die. And die they did.

So when ever I hear "street racing"... negativity abounds !

One concern about rallyists being involved in "safe" street racing at night and on low traffic roads, is the potential harm this can do to the credibility of the sport.

You guys who are doing this are in non decaled street cars, right ?

I plaster as many SCCA stickers as possible on my car.

Seriously though, I don't agree with or condone flat out racing on roads, or even racing at all outside of a sanctioned, insured, and properly organized event.

There was a death in the 80s during a real event in which a competitor ran head on into another vehicle that wasn't supposed to be on the stage. I've heard the story from two of the following competitors that were first on the scene. That type of occurence is why we have safety workers and organizing bodies.

I think more of what is being referred to is TSD style events, in which while the driving is most likely over the unposted speed limit of 25 mph but below a closed road rally speed.

I started out in Mom's Plymouth Satelite, with no driving skill, no fear and a trunk full of beer. We would spend Saturday night playing on the back roads. I lived in a rural area of NH. Now I live in the same place, but it is less rural. Not saying it was remotely smart or responsible, but it happened. It's a miracle we are alive. I guess Satan was out of shovels or something when I was a teenager. The sanctioned events came much later.

I suggest that Ontario Winter Rally is the best example of a brisk TSD, that I know of.

Edit : I used immigrant as an example to illustrate that street racing involving fatalities is leading to deportation for non citizens, some people have lost their drivers license for life.

I'm not trying to single out the immigrants, I'm afterall one myself !

Exactly Grant. With speeds and or conditions that make the driver earn their spot on the road, but not so high that it's total carnage on every bend in the road. And since these are usually at night (so there is less traffic and you can see what little traffic there is as it comes over the hill) on back roads, you need a navigator to help get you lost.

This also gives the guy/gal in the right hand seat an equal shot at having a hand in helping put the car way off the road...after he/she gets you lost.

It's more pure, more basic...what (I surmise) rally used to be before lawyers.

As for the street racer formerly known as Eduardo Mayhem, stay the fuck out of his way...el loco.

Is it ok to rally on open roads in South America or Africa?
