The Root of rallying

What's the root of rallying...

Was it first a navigational event, TSD, or a stage event and did it start on pavement (tarmac for the purists) or on gravel ?

Someone on Special stage had an old video of a show called 'The power and the Glory'. Shows really well the root of rally. Plus has some great footage of vintage rallying.
I have a copy if anyone wanted to host it for me somehow, or tell me how to do it.
Cheers

The first car races in the 1890s were run under a rally format in that they were on open roads and the cars started at timed intervals. But as cars got faster, open road racing was banned and moved to the closed track. The first rally was the Monte Carlo in 1911. Motorists started from several different locations across Europe and rallied (meaning joined together) in Monte Carlo. This was organized by the equivalent of the Vistors and Convention bureau of Monte Carlo to attract people to stay in the hotels in February when room occupancy was low. This is a TSD rally in that exact speeds had to be maintained instead of going as fast as possible. Other events followed. Over the years, various events would have some legs where the required time was set so short that it was a performance rally. Finally, in the late 60s, early 70s, the format was formalized. In the US, there was the MONY series and finally, in 1973, the SCCA Pro Rally series. In the late 70s, early 80s, there was also another sanctioning organization called NARA and later NARRA.

This is the cliff notes version. Let me know if you want more info.

Hey, it's 156mbs, so I don't think I can't mail it with any of my services, including my ISP. Too bad sad smiley.
I got it from Randy Zimmer, who has a pretty good server set up, maybe someone can get it from him and host it, so anone here who hasn't seen it can get a copy, its totally worth watching for the vintage filming and interviews.
Otherwise is there a way I can dump it into someones FTP or something?
Hope I can help out before I head back to work tomorrow afternoon.
Cheers

Watch "Legends of Motorsport" on SpeedTV, especially the "Alpine Rally" and so on...

http://www.motorfilms.com/videos.php?id=55

I think that's the roots of the modern era of stage rally.

What't the matter? Don't you young whipper snappers believe your elders when they tell you that the first ever rally was the 1911 Monte Carlo? The name came from the fact that the teams rallied together from many different locations. Every thing else has just been a slow evolution.

Oh man. Back when I used to get speedvision (just "Speed" now I guess) as part of basic cable, I used to watch legends of motorsport all the time. Man that show was great.

And why was that show great? I'll tell ya....

Because motorsports *used* to be great (from the local circle track, Winston Cup, and all the way to Formula 1). Now it's just a bunch of over-priced, over-engineered, over-sponsored, boring buckets of bolts and carbon fiber.

Okay... someone is going to mention the Porsche 917 or the Ford GT-40 and mention what they cost. Sure, they were big dollar cars, but they were great cars the likes of which we probably won't see again.

What *scares me* is the idea that 30-40 years from *now*,
people will be similarly waxing nostalgic about how back
at the turn of the century, it was Real Men doing Great
Things despite not having any money or engineering in the
cars they wrestled to victory.

Because it will probably come to pass!

I don't think many will be getting all teary-eyed and sentimental about the current crop of mommymobile rally cars, Nextel Cup, or the current crop of F1 cars.

What is there to remember about recent years? Nothing, other than Michael Schumacher's 7 world championships.
