Wouldn't it have been over all cheaper to buy a euro intake cam? I thought the euro intake cam and the modded exhaust cam were pretty equivilent in heat, but perhaps i'm mistaken.

Lurch, your parts look exelent. The bushings in the rear of my machine have to be as old as the car...

Duuuuuudes, at some point youse guys ought to think about real actual honest to yumin' yimminy rally cams from da ol' country.
Dose square heads make some stuff that's really rootin' tootin' rip snortin' kick ass and at realistic rev range.
Now you'd have to bump your static compression up a fair bit but the effective compression ratio aint really too insane if you start your comprssion ratio calculations from the point that the intake valve closes.

Want more learnin' about the interplay between intake valve closing and real compression???

And Lurchie-baby Ford Motorsport uses spherical bearings on their semi-trailing arms and the ram intyo shit while going sideways at 147 mph over jumps and landing hard, they don't bend nuthing, you sure you had chosen the SIZE up to the task??

No. Not sure at all. smiling smiley

Did the Furds have as wide of a clevis? Was it in a twist beam application?

Pop spec'd his own cams from Webb Cams. As root-tootin' as you can go with the stockish toilet seat Bosch injection system. 11.5:1.

That car is FUUUUN.

Unfortunately, after Saturday, it's gone.

Re: Hello There.

Of course I'd love some nice meaty bump sticks along with new pistons and fancy oversized back cut valves in a ported head, but I cant afford them and I'd rather race a slow car than have a fast car I cant use cause I'm too broke to pay the entry fees. And I'm still not good enough of a driver to use all 130ish hp my car has. So using the exhaust cam as an intake accomplishes a few things for me: 1) Its kinda a fun engineering exercize where I get to learn about cam phasing and its effects on engine performance (werent you saying something, John, about kids these days and their love for bolt on parts? I dont wanna be like that.) 2) If I do it right it should give me a little HP 3) I've already got spare cams so its inexpensive.
A euro intake cam costs around $180 new, but the stock exhaust cam has more lift and duration anyways. So if all I have to do is some math and then get a keyway cut, for my situation, I'm better off trying the exhaust cam. Thats my style.

I did this with my first Mazda engine. Re-pinned a Japan spec exhaust cam for use as an intake cam.

Actually, I didn't do it. I had help.

----Rather then getting a keyway cut get yourself an adjustable drive gear if one is available. The rest of the world makes them VW things do all manner of wacky stuff so I'd imagine that you should not be doing something new and exciting.

So what are you saying Lurch? That you were the one who DROVE his 110HP Golf? I would not rule this out.....

As for the flimsy POS twist-beam thing that VW uses......
Carl DO give it the firm bushings and do the reinforcement arms.
Do also have a complete ready-to-go twist-beam in the service truck at ALL times.

Lurch I got to work with your suspension goodies with Derek Bottles' Golf (rest it's soul) and liked how they worked. Derek just went so damned fast that he tore stuff up again and again and again.....

The High-zoot motor will insure that you need the wayyy expensive driveshafts.
Carl it would behoove you to buy Derek's Golf in it's current bent form. It has a really snotty motor, the VW motorsports gearbox, the driveshafts with 911 turbo C/V joints, big hubs that should live longer......on and on.

? Yeah. I guess. I bought the car in 99? and drove it for 2 years. When I got it, it was plain worn out. I went thru the entire suspension and left the engine alone, for the most part...okay, I got rid of the goofy Volvo fuel distributor and put a stock 85 Golf FD on it.

The original Group A engine had been robbed long before I got it. Just had 2.0 Audi block and a silly 8V head.

Glad you liked 'em. I'm dragging pop kicking and screaming into the 1980s with his first CNC machine so we'll be able to do more parts for more applications in the future.

As for adjustable cams pulleys, VWs have one cam pulley driving both cams...the two cams are attached by a small chain. So, while you can adjust the overall cam timing, you can't adjust intake and exhaust individual from each other...unless you re-pin one of the cams. Which is what Carl is talking about. We've made adjustable pulleys to replace the one pulley, though.

You can actually get some adjustable internal cam gears for the 16v, made by Kent cams I think. But they're like $160, which would defeat the purpose of this being something cheap that I can do tongue sticking out smiley

But I do like all the advice you guys are giving. I'm putting it all in the "eventually" catagory for when I make more than $9 and hour and in the meantime I'll try not to suck as much at driving.

Hrm..last I knew euro intake cams were only about a C note?

I spent $200 on a 1.8 head, set of 268's, and adjustable cam gear for mine in a local sale.

My buddy finished this up today for me:

should be cool.
