I think you are thinking of Dave Coleman's Mazda3.

This thread was about JVL building a fast road car engine for an xr.
I havent found anyone who's done the destroked 2.5 using a 2.3 crank.
I was just wondering if John ever did build an engine for this guy.

I DID find a guy who put a 2.5 duratec bottom end with a 2.3 head though-and it's a rally car-here:
