Portland to Seattle in the mornings
April 10, 2006 02:17PM
Okay, so I am considering cruising up to Seattle to go by the JVL compound on Thursday. I fly in late Wednesday to Portland, and am considering getting a rental car for the weekend. So I have most of Thursday off (have a dinner with some sponsors from Australia that night in Portland) so thought about going up. It's 160 miles from Mapquest. But what's the drive like between the two. I heard there is a little mountain pass and then there is rush hour to consider. So thought I'd get some opinions. Plus I haven't actually got a rental car, or decided if I am going to (wouldn't use it Thursday through Sunday) and haven't talked to John to see if he'd even be around. But, anyone regularily made that trip?

The trip is easy and flat, no pass. The big considerations is traffic during rush hour (7-9am and 3-7pm) in both Portland and Olympia, tacoma and Seattle. The drive will take you about 3.5 hours with no traffic, much more if you do (took me 6 hours on a Friday to make it to Portland)

That's the kind of stuff I'm trying to find out. I'll be staying over off of Powell and SE 21st with some friends from back home. Last time we stayed up until 6 am drinking beer and having a bonfire in their backyard. Houses in the middle of an industrial areas rule. So not sure on how quick I'd make it out in the morning.

Fly IN to Seattle and we can fix a cheap ass rental from a friend.
Hitch-hike up and I'll LEND you the diesel van.
PLAN ferfuckssake!!!!

And yeah I'm here, you can crash on the floor where the guys who come down from BC do.

You could call to.

Yeah miss the traffic. The traffic heading SOUTH on Fridays is bad from Sleezatttle to 15 miles past Aroma.

I thought about that, but it was more and then I'd have had to drive up to Seattle after the rally. You see, the problem lately with calling (and I keep meaning to) for me is that I am working over 70 hours per week, and a typical day is wake up at 6 am, work at 7 am, off at 3:30, haul ass home, shower, change, let the dog out, eat something, then off to second job, where I get off after 10. Home and to bed. Weekends I usually work doubles at the sushi grill which usually end up being 12-4 and 5-midnight. I had yesterday off but don't have another night off until I leave to Portland. And spent last night taking out and disassembling the transmission thanks to exploding 2nd gear in the Subaru we're racing OT in.

But, I found a cheap rental car. Will plan on coming up Thursday morning early. I'll call you before then. Maybe tonight as I'm supposed to get off early.

I was just in Seattle yesterday. My brother drove up from Portland and it took him 2.5 hours to get to Seatac. It's probably take longer during the week, but it at least give you an idea.

Hey Grant, why not fly into one and out the other. They've all but stopped doing strip searches at the airport.

BTW, you can almost hit the Sea-Tac airport with a rock from John's place. You could walk there from the airport if you had to. Commuter flights between Seattle and Portland can be really cheap. Maybe not as cheap as a rental, but less time.

I found out I get discounted rentals through my government job so I can get one for the whole time I'm there for under $100. Chevy Aveo automatic here I come!

So, John, I'm thinking come up directly from PDX on Wednesday ( I get in around 7:30 pm) and floor it on Wednesday night. Then hang out Thursday morning. The only real obligation I have is the sponsor dinner on Thursday night with my driver and his dad so I'd probably need to leave Sleezetown around 4.

You know all the right things to say to get me to keep that right foot planted. "But officer, the reason I was going 100 is I'm heading up to JVL's and he's got these bitchin' alloy brake hats that are going to give me kick ass braking ability. I have got to get there quick. Actually, could you escort me up there, then I could go even faster? (sense of urgency in tone)"

I have on many occasions in cars farrr shittier then the Avio made it from North of JV's place to Portland in an hour and fifty...... Do watch for Deputy Doughnut with his laser gun. Expect to see him in numbers in particular around Centralia and Chehalis.
Drive safe.

One more day... I'll call you tonight John. I finally have a night off (tonight_. I've worked 70-75 hours per week for the last three and haven't had a day off since like the beginning of March. This weekend can't come quick enough. In fact, I think I'll take a sick day tomorrow too.
