Searching & work
January 25, 2006 11:40PM
Scott mentioned he was nervous about his employer "finding this site"

I could add a robots.txt file that would cause search engines not to index this site.

On the negative side, that means if people are searching for rally stuff on Google/etc that we may have talked about, it won't show up in the results.

So, what's the vote on this?

Same here, I'm as neutral as the Norwegians were in World War 2 until the Nazi's attacked them anyways.

Fucking Krauts...

Why don't German kids play hide and go seek ?
Because the other kids don't want to go look for them !

You could always just start "Anarchy Time", add or subtract 12 hours and make it a 24 hour time clock. The 24 hours time clock confuses North Amerians to begin with anyways.

Well if I could only edit my posting name to just "Scott" or something. That would help. But I guess it's still in the signature. I don't think our IT dept. has the time to go looking for us in the net, but....... They might get around to hiring an outside company. Damn Sarbanes-Oxly (J/K).

All of my action on this site gets reported to the Governors office. Any site that is classified as a "blogging" site is tracked and reviewed. This, craigslist, and if I enter specialstage direct through the forums. So be warned, big brother is watching. But I guess I'm kind of big brother anyhow, since I work for the state government, am an agent of the feds, and what I do is confidential to most.

Apparently Jens isn't going to come to this board any more, because he doesn't like the personal info in the signature requirement.

Well I'll bring this back from the dead, but is there a way to remove the IP address from the posts, any decently smart IT guy will recognize the company's public IP address and know your posting from work

Maybe you could actually be doing what you're getting paid to do?
Hate to be a party pooper, but I really don't have any sympathy for guys fucking off at work.

But if Skye is willing to enable your dysfunction, that's up to him.

Well I don't really care about it but its like the ostrich syndrome, just because you stick your head in the ground, does not mean no one can see you. And I suspect the people who are worried about this type of thing are not going to be the ones to setup their own proxy winking smiley

Oh and I'm ignoring the fact that its a very poor idea from a secuirty stand point. Wow 254 guesses and anyone has my IP address. Once again, I don't really care as my crap is locked up.. but not everyone is "computer savvy" and is there a need to have it with every post???

What about if you're eating lunch, or on hold, or maybe you were off that day but you can in because you forgot your favorite Snickers bar and while you were there you just had to check up on the ol' R-A?

I have had this scenario happen, fortunately I'd been making a point to only check things "of a non work nature" while on lunch, so we were able to use this as a basis for a mutual understanding... But some employers aren't so understanding, they only see "You used company electrons for personal benefit!!" instead of the Big Picture.
