International Competitor Survey
December 22, 2010 02:19PM
I'm doing some research for a story in Gearbox Magazine. I'd like to ask the rally community at large a brief survey about the 2010 season, compile the results based on region (global), and share the results with everyone. It would be neat to see how rally compares where we live to other parts of the world.

I hope you'll find this a worthwhile way to spend a couple minutes.

Looking back at 2010...

- How many events did you enter?
- How much was the least expensive event you entered?
- How much was the most expensive event you entered?
- What was the shortest distance you traveled to an event?
- What was the longest distance you traveled to an event?
- Approximately how many stage kilometers/miles did you drive this year?
- How many competitors were there in your class over the year?
- How many competition licenses did you need this year?
- What was the worst thing that happened at a rally this year?
- What was the best thing that happened at a rally this year?

This is a random idea I'm working with. Hope to hear from you.

You just want events competed in? Or events worked too? Cuz I typically go to 9-12 events a year, but only compete in about 4-6 and work the rest.

- How many events did you enter? 4 "club rallies" ( rally/autocross-like stages, but separate stages within ~30 miles radius), 4 sprints and what we call a minirally (single day stage rally).
- How much was the least expensive event you entered? Free... Cause the event sponsor paid the fee for all competitors that had upgraded their license this season.
- How much was the most expensive event you entered? ~150 USD I think.
- What was the shortest distance you traveled to an event? ~10 miles (which was also the free event).
- What was the longest distance you traveled to an event? ~200 miles (the minirally - Denmark is a small country - it was litterally in the other end of the country smiling smiley).
- Approximately how many stage kilometers/miles did you drive this year? ~300 km
- How many competitors were there in your class over the year? 4 for the clubrally, 8-10 at the sprints and 12 or so at the minirally.
- How many competition licenses did you need this year? One...
- What was the worst thing that happened at a rally this year? Puncture on a fairly new gravel tire I think. Or a broken CV joint :-).
- What was the best thing that happened at a rally this year? Doing the minirally. Proper stage rally with recce and everything. Big sense of accomplishment.

Best regards Brian

Apologies for the late reply, gents. Tis the season for running around like a headless chicken, right?

@Michel - Ultimately, I would like to do something like this for each of the more prominent roles in the sport - driver, co-driver, organizer, volunteer, et al.. Apples to apples and all that jazz.

This being the first year we're doing this, I'm concerned I won't be able to gather enough data to really allow for comparison on a global level, but I believe the idea has merit and am open to feedback with regard to how this could be tweaked to be the most useful.

@Morison - I am open to co-driver data, but how do you think it might impact the results of the survey? Should there be separate driver/co-driver surveys? Perhaps team surveys?

@everyone - What do you think of the questions posed. Are there any others you'd like asked to the greater rally community?

Thanks for the input, folks. I sincerely appreciate it!

Depends on what you're trying to get out of the results.
Team surveys don't work because some people co-drive for different teams through the year. (I co-drove for three different drivers)
I think you want to simply add (driver/codriver) to the competitor survey

The bigger question is what are you trying to measure... if it is someone's involvement in the sport then there should be a 'part b' that goes into volunteerism. Not sure what the questions would look like there.

Have you thought of posting this as a survey on your site rather than manually collecting the data?
