An invite for JVL
August 05, 2006 08:16PM
John,

If I recall correctly, you've had a long-standing gripe that rallies in the US and Canada are way too fast and open compared to Europe, and I'd like to invite you down to the Gorman Ridge Rally in Southern California in two weeks.

No, I can't supply a car for you to drive, but perhaps you can talk Adam into coming down with the Corolla?

The roads are tight and twisty, with jumps and a bunch of rough patches. I'd be curious to hear your opinion.

Doood, nice invite but I am buried way more than normal cause we are concentrating on getting my sweet wife thru University as fast as possible, and that means she's been loading up courses and she doesn't get back till 3.30 and I stay and do the babysiting and what parts deals I can, THEN go do what work I can till i drop.

Very behind.
There's no way I can take time off just to go play.
In fact wifey and baby are going home to China for 2 weeks between quarters and I can't go despite having business to do there.
Fabricating
8-9 alternator brackets
8-9 PS brackets
7 sump guard center supports
10 diff mounts
10 square suspesion subframes
More turbo outlet flanges
Honda B16b just done
VW Corroddo G lader thing just done
Volvo 2300 8v Turbo half done.
Ford 2300 final intercooler plumbing remaining
Ford cossie 4x4 water and intercooler remaining
Saab V4, water and brake plumbing ands rear disc converstion remaining
Evo suspension test fit
Xratty rear shocks to order
Motor mounts for Paddy and Grant to fab
Sheetmetal for motormounts for Paddy, Grant, John to drill and bend.
6 Downpipes for Cossie turbo to fab

Thats just the work.
Planning parts for JVAB 50mm Bilstein stuff
Brokering S14 LHD drift parts
Importing 50 Volvo rods and 36 pistons for Volvo turbo pervs
Importing AE86 rods for a drift customer
Buying 150 rod bolts for me and somebody in NZ
Ordering a pile of calipers and discs for Xratty pervs

Working on Garage.

And I understand Gorman is twisty, shame its so far, but I just don't have time.

You thinking of coming for Wild Waste?

I definitely won't be driving at Wild West, but I might come up as worker or co-driver.

Adam, also must politely decline.
JVL's list left off my (new) struts he is finishing.
if those are around in time for the event, I still have to figure out
a fun economical way to get RX7 calipers in the front,
and a volvo rear axle to play together.
even if it means i have to sell 6 perfect 14in Falkens.

oh, i dont have a job. CATIA any one?

peace

I've often declared 2-4+ litres of rye hootch without having to pay any duty -- the customs officer said something about "we don't bother with reasonable amounts for personal consumption/gifts". But beware if you try to import any Ontario wines, the US Customs is very stict about poisonous swill that may be a health hazzard. And of course LCBO prices are even higher and selections worse than hotel mini bars in the states. Just bring your $$ and buy down here. the weak greenback can be your friend!

Ok listen you australian wine poofter, been to the LCBO lately? There's a selection now, but the prices still blow.

That being said, I was more curious about beer. The thought of American beer scares me, and it's like 2 days down there...

just been to the LCBO on Spadina & Baldwin...

yeah, there's no Rickards Red south of the border, which is a bummer, but there is still plenty of excellent beer -- it's not _all_ like sex in a canoe. Stay clear of anything advertised on tv (unless you fancy watery stuff like labatt's blue, and there is plenty of similar swill stateside.)

Have a good trip south. And bring some hard currency, we need it to fund our x games superstars.

I dont' get all the dissing American beer? Maybe 15 or 20 years ago, but damn there is good beer to be had, though I don't care for most American stout - too sweet. And if you're in nearly any other state besides Washington, its affordable.

After two trips to Quebec this year (Perce Niege and Baie de Chaleurs), I can say that if you buy American Labatt's Bleu, it's basically drinking Canadian Budweiser. Not that that's a good thing, mind you. Stay away from USDM Bud, you're much better off with Pabst Blue Ribbon (proud sponsor of National Public Radio) for cheap suds.

Just stick with American microbrews and you'll (usually) be fine. There's a lot of good stuff out there!

That's one reason why I am glad to live in Wisconsin. Seems there's microbrewery's in every other town. I've even got a bunch of buddies that do homebrewing, in fairly large amounts, and their stuff tastes just phenomenal!

Well all you boys needn't worry. Seattle really has a good variety of breweries and add in the Western Washington and Portland Oregon and you have a veritable plethora, a Supra-abondance of beers.
I'll see if we can arrange some of da boys come over and we'll hold Paddy down and force him to drink some beers!!! We'll show him some hospitality!
