Safety Equipment for Newbies

I've been thinking about ways to simplify participation in the sport for new participants lately, and one of the common threads I've heard about is the cost of safety apparel.

I've given away two pairs of racing shoes, a set of new overalls, and a set of fire-retardant long johns/turtleneck to new competitors this year. It strikes me though that this need might better be met by having experienced competitors donate their old equipment to a common location, and having someone administer the loan or (very cheap) rental of suits, helmets, shoes etc. for events. For instance, if someone where willing to store 5-10 donated suits, helmets, and shoes in three or four regional locations, these could be brought to or sent to competitors at rallies, and provide a more efficient distribution of safety equipment until people have money to buy their own.

Sounds good, although I wouldn't be surpised if they started expiring fire suits soon... or requiring 3 layer etc...

If someone "connected" can set it up, I'll store the safety equipment and make it available as needed. It's a good idea !

Pat Richard was going to loan me a brain bucket for PFR but when he told me about the sweat and grime... I went and bought my own instead, but that's just me cause I'm such a wuss.

Just make a requirement that people have to wear a balaclava, and you won't have much of an issue with grime...

I don't see how that would help, in fact I think the honey and flaky pastry would combine to make it quite messy inside the helmet, and with the honey combining with sweat and dripping down into your eyes it could be a safety issue. Tasty though!

Christian it dosen't seem to make a difference. Pat always wears one and then hangs it on the wiper stalk at service to dry out. Every once and a while I would accidentally touch it while doing stuff inside the car and run screaming like a girl in terror.
