All the Nellies worried of the mass death and pestileence should remember that most people riding off road bikes are NOT fat, blobular, out of shape Mid Western Co-drivers, and routinely dive off at all sorts of speeds, and jump right up.

Everytjing is NEAR CERTAIN DEATH to those same worry warts.
It makes them think their lives are "edgy".

I would think a rally road would be very very fast on a bike. I wonder if they will run in packs or get single starts like the cars?

Good idea though - way more political pull in the Moto crowd, more entries lower fees etc. Much more marketable too I would think, millions of dirt bikes dozens of rally cars in the USA.

Averaging 55 mph is completely casual, chit chat thing.
I've averaged 75 for 20 miles once when like 20 minutes late.
But this was aninitiative from the BMW club so who knows what it'll be.

But really, only full on loooonies ride the roads, they are just too fast.

JVL, where did you find that it will be TSD?

I do have to wonder how insurance would view an accident on bike and if it would effect the car rally side...

How does one fit a roll cage on a bike? Is there a fire proof shield around the fuel tank? Does one tighten or keep the six point harness loose? Oh wait, one is not in a car but on a bike, which is quicker and more intimate with the scenery then a car....!!!

Have you guys been catching the Dakar on TV ?

Hey All-

It's been a long time since I posted, and since you guys already had a subject started on this, I wanted to pull it back up from the dead, and see if anyone here had some ideas.

I have my new BMW 650 Dakar on the way, and I'm already looking for an event that I can plug tulips into the GPS.

My first gut reaction was to see if Laughlin would be available to allow someone to run at the back of the field. If I'm not mistaken they already have GPS points in the route book, well two years ago at least.

I know a phone call to Ray and Roger would be more in line, but this out of shape overweight midwest navigator will already be in a car for that event, so it is all a moot point talking to Laughlin.

But does anyone else know of an event that might be willing to bend the rules for a moto? Or maybe you know of a proper MotoRally. No TSD crap. Proper Rally.

My personal thoughts:

Best fuckin' thing to happen to the sport in the last while,( or at least since big $ and P cars have proliferated) if you are interested in building and tuning and testing. For the normal guy I/we can afford this. You can even build totally custom, double throw down machinery for a quarter of the price. Build two and be a team owner.All you need is a van or a pickup truck, no godforsaken flickery light trailer. No two car garage, I used to prep my bike in a garden shed then moved into the spare room for winter overhauls.

Surf for a while and discover the sheer volume of performance and tuning parts available at a reasonable cost. In fact the motorcycle world is much more turned on to real tuning and mod than the car people are.

O.K. So you haven't ever ridden a motorbike on gravel( this is where my premise gets shaky) go get yourself a shit box enduro 175 and go and rip around on the gravel you wil be racing on ( push left,go left etc.). In no time you will be able to offer insight into the nuance of the sport.

I think JVL has it right in saying that these fellers are not letting happen what they are afraid of doing themselves.

I'll try to have my bike and myself ready in time for that!!!

I also saw on the ADVrider forums that NASA Rally Sport (Wilson to be specific) has been talking about trying to get a national championship series going. Would be pretty cool to see!

Of course being the complete bastard that I am, I've also started calling people and trying to pitch letting us run at the back or in Parrellel to a rally. Just to measure people's interest. Surprisingly most of the people I've spoken seem very receptive to the idea, from a logistical point of view.

But one thing jumped out, Fees. Everyone was curious about what the finally cost to a rider would be. Given that most Moto-Rally people are accustom to a 80-100 dollar entry fee, a 850 dollar entry to run a championship event would most likely not go over well. But I'm sure that the idea that when they hit a tree they will have some insurance would be nice.

Oh well, for now I think I'm just going to go back to the backcountry roads around minnesota and wisonsin.

Seems kind of insane to me to be running a bike on the fast open roads we use for rally, but maybe that's just me... trail riding, enduro, sure!

Different strokes......It seems kind of insane to most people to run street based cars on the tight twisty treelined bumpy roads we run rally cars on.

some events may lend themselves to rally moto better than others.
