Grr.

#3 was misleading; I got it wrong because I saw two correct answers listed, and wasn't too sure about the third, so I checked "All of the above" instead of trying to choose between two correct statements. (Dammit, they *do* increase engine/turbo life by reducing EGTs - if it goes in cooler, it comes out cooler)

#10 was misleading; 3 of the answers are technically correct, so I chose the most pragmatic and least vague one. Then got stamped with a big fat WRONG!

There were other misleading ones that I happened to choose the correct out of multiple possibilities just from luck of the draw. (I could *swear* that I chose a different answer for #2: The turbine is pressure driven, the heat loss is a function of this pressure loss... must have slipped and clicked the wrong (right) one)

But what pisses me off is that there are little tests like this in SCHOOL nowadays too. And he kiddies are being *graded* on them...

12.
Pete, I had the same thing happen. If you click on an answer, and then use a scroll wheel on the mouse, it will move the answer to D.

I scored 9, and the answer to #1 is flat wrong. The turbo just celebrated it's 100th aniversary. Which couldn't be the case if answer B is correct.

Pete- If air density increases, then more fuel is added creating a greater volume of exhaust gas/heat. They do increase engine/turbo life by reducing intake temps.

I scored 15.

Question 1. The first exhaust-driven turbocharger, or "supercharger," was developed between: there was supercharging on the market by 1912...

The word "turbocharger" is shorthand for turbosupercharger, meaning a supercharger driven by a turbine. It's a specific form of supercharger. I know centrifugal superchargers were in early use, but did the exhaust driven supercharger really predate it?

And ifn' you don't think engine life and turbo life aren't affected by EGTs, I can scrounge up some Dorito-shaped exhaust valves and turbine wheels that look like they were gnawed upon by rats smiling smiley

Pete I wasn't arguing that EGT's don't effect engine life, just that intercoolers don't in and of themselves drop EGTs in most apps. Seems they should all things being equal, but they rarely are.

The exhaust driven supercharger celebrated it's 100th ani. last year. I remember hearing an article on NPR, maybe science friday. It was developed and patented in 1905 by Alfred Buchi for the internal combustion engine. Garrett didn't develop a turbo until sometime later. Probably explains the test's answer.

Sure were some dumb qustions, who cares about their latest junk?
Wacky answers too.

But thjis is interesting:
The exhaust gas turbocharger was invented exactly 100 years ago: On 16 November 1905 Swiss engineer Dr. Alfred Büchi received patent No. 204630 from the Imperial Patent Office of the German Reich for a "combustion machine consisting of a compressor (turbine compressor), a piston engine, and a turbine in sequential arrangement".

Born on 11 July 1879, Büchi, who died on 27 October 1959, worked as an engineer in the Swiss town of Winterthur. His idea was not just to pre-compress the air flowing into the engine, but also to use the kinetic energy coming out in the exhaust gas under high pressure, which otherwise was simply wasted. So he used the exhaust gas flowing out after the combustion process to drive a turbine serving, in turn, to drive a compressor pre-compressing the intake air and boosting the air charge in the engine. This marked the birth of the turbocharger.

>>>>>Büchi had to wait a long time until his invention was able to enter practical use. The first application of turbocharger technology was in large marine engines, with the German Ministry of Transport commissioning the construction of the "Danzig" and "Preussen" passenger liners in 1923. <<<<<<<<<

Each of these two passenger ships had twin ten-cylinder diesel engines with output boosted by turbocharger technology from 1750 to 2500 horsepower.

Thanks Mustafa.

Don't hold back cuz there is a grain fed midwesterner amongst you. I can take it. John and I have had our share of late night conversations (my ear hurts) and we agree much more than we disagree.

He knows I sold my soul to the evil side. Well, not the Subaru side...but evil none the less.
