Grassroots rally. It's what I think about.

We were in a 2WD and we did not hate SandBlast at all. We only hated ShugahSand, but not much, just a liiiiiiiitle bit. Next year 93 days before the event I will drop 500.000 Tons of good ole dirt on that shit.

I like cheap rallying. Shoot me if you catch me pay $900 (and that's early reg) for a TWO DAY regional. As if club-man competitors can afford all that + 2 extra days to take off of work for RECCE (get fucking real), 3-4 days hotel, plus for next year get a fucking HANS device. I wonder what kind of reality some dumbfucks live in.

Oh Moose! That fucking dumbass mentioned above also posted that he ran that event on tires he bought back in 1998. Sorry, but I don't really trust tires after a couple of years, much less nearly 10.

Is there any way to petition the use of HANS device for RA club events? Thats gonna chew up about half of my budget, and I'd still be running as a novice. It doesnt make much sense. If there were a bigger pro-contingent with prize$$ and real manufacturer interest, then I would understand. But RA DOESNT appear to put on a big enough "show" to squash the clubman interest. Maybe Mr Millionaire (ken Block) can afford to supply everyone with a HANS.

I know that the MFR was a losing operation the past 2 years, coincindentally that was the same year that RA assumed the position. In 2004 there were over 65 competitors, many from MA/NH/CT(just about the number required to break even). in 2005 there were only aout 40 (25 of which were either mitsu's or suubies). Last year I think Reg was up to around 48 or so, again with more than half of the cars running open class 4wd's. I'm pretty sure its not the organizers b/c Buffum is very well liked among the competitors and he runs a tight event. I would think that a Red Flag would go up at RA, and they would try and increase participation rather than diminish it. I basically think RA is a joke of an organization and will eventually Fail. and I hope someone in MN reads this thread.

Not sure what your gripe is here, Moose.
All that happened is that Pete was unable to start Stages 1-4, but was allowed to tag on the end of the line of 5,6 and 7 for fun. I'm pretty sure this is common practice in many events and I don't have anything against it.
The competitor (whomever it may be) has paid their entry fee and by either bad luck or poor prep has not been able to complete the stage. I don't see the problem with allowing them to have some fun and get some seat/test time.

As for the steering wheel coming off - it's one of the quick release jobbies that I don't care for, but it happens. I have had a normal steering wheel come loose (not quite off!) on stage myself. It wasn't pushed back on right and evidently came off while Pete was on stage. Theoretically it COULD happen on a road section, but since they are not routinely driven in anger I'm sure there would be more attention being paid to stuff like that - not on getting down the stage as quick as possible.

You are spot on. The "systems" are out of control..

There are some pretty crazy cars on stage these days. The active diffs, launch control,and standalone ecu's (w custom mapping) are the staples of Open class. That's where the gap will be (and is) widening in the near future.. You have to pay to play. That's true for whatever car you wind up building, but there seems to be no end in sight for the "bling" parts. It is pretty cool to listen to a rally car`that sounds like a jet on takeoff though..

One computer is enough to have to rely on with no other fancy bullshit. Then to worry about a diff computer, uggh..It takes more than a turn of the screwdriver on the carb to keep these things running right anymore. But even the most proper of old schoolers (the cortina) had issues with a new engine..

We're all out there for the same reason, some people just want to pay more to play than others.. Others just use 4 generations of parts to build a car that suits them best. That winds up being Open Class too. There's Open, then there's OPEN...the pocket book! It's hard to win a gun fight with a knife.. I've heard it can be done..if the gun is out of ammo.

A guy was chatting with me about an Xratty the other day..got the gears turning a bit.

As long as there are people with money and no cap on what can be done in Open Class there will be crazy technology introduced to rallying. There isn't much we can do about it. They will have the bells and whistles and those who don't have that kind of disposable cash will settle for what they can afford. Obviously the near WRC cars will have the upper hand until but those drivers will offset their driving talent deficiencies with technology. They will be more prone to make a costly mistake compared to the guys who offset their technical handicap with pure driving skills. And there are talented drivers in UberAdvanced cars, then we are fucked.
