Affordable Cage Fabricators in the GTA/Ontario?
August 09, 2013 03:56PM
Before I slave away at a cage I wanted to know if there are any shops/people/shacks in Ontario that do cages for a reasonable price. I need the cage to pass CARS tech.

Thanks,

No. You need the cage to save your life. Passing CARS tech is a bonus.

Sorry, I have no recommendation for a cage builder. My favourite is a long way away from you. But does the North American Cage Builder Map help?

There's a bunch in the area. Affordable is relative smiling smiley Call and talk to them.

Ones I know of that are probably reasonable:
Hot Bits/Tonik Motorsports, try Peter Reilly
Rally/Race Developments, Ryan Huber
Ronnie O'Brien(?), I don't know much more about him but he did the Juggernaut Focus cages and they seem to be pretty good. Contact the Juggernaut guys, Andrew Kulikowski or Gary Sutherland

Ones that I know of which may be more expensive, but YMMV:
Four Star Motorsports
Can-Jam Motorsports
CSC Racing (not sure if they do CARS cages, usually they do other series from what I know?)

Bringing this back from the dead too.

New car, still need a cage. Who has a shed, and likes beer? And pizza?

I'm still calling around to the major "shops", but there has to be some drunken master cage builders out there in or around the GTA. A $4000 cage isn't an option for me, lol.

Cheers,

Carthik

Yeah it's gotten out of hand this cage stuff. People are charging now "what the market will bear" and the connection between time and materials is out the window..
I'd contact "CAGETHIS" in the metro Boston area, guy seems straight and does what looks klike good work to a fair price.

You get what you pay for.

Nonsense Robert and you know it...
Some of the most expensive cages what you got in the past might be silcone caulking to close the gap at the unwelded portion ------but those guys were awesome---- or you got an exxxtra coat of clear "cause that really makes the interior look bitchin"...
Or tubes not accomplishing a single thing towards safety or reliability, but jacking the cost...

No connection at all between quality and price.
Reputation. or ..bullshit and price yes.

Why would a guy who has skills, tools and experience work for cheap? Highly unlikely unless he is doing you a big favor.

A person who will work below market rate probably is missing one or more of the above attributes: skills, tools and or experience.

In my mind what this then boils down to is the probability of getting a quality product.

An affordable cage that is well done usually means someone doing it on the side and subsidizing it with a regular job.
I've helped "fix" two wrongly done cages and had three others that were unfixable ie. cut it out.

I know at least one former cage fabricator that figured the price had to go over $4-5K to justify the time it took compared to the other projects he was working on. Automotive service pays well. We subsidize our cage building now by hopefully gaining some retail sales, tire mounting, etc. to our cage customers. We should charge more based on the man hours that come in. Luckily none of the three of us charge anywhere near what we make hourly in our other pursuits. Today I'm double dipping and have machines doing work for me across the parking lot while I'm working on three different cage projects. And I'm stealing labor by having Mark work on CAM stuff for cage feet so that we can use the CNC/mill for cutting cage feet. The machines are capable are generating around $2000 per hour in retail revenue, the entire day of cage work might get a quarter of that.

Did you talk to Ryan H.?

I am not sure you are going to find anyone in Ontario that would do a good cage for less than what he charges.
