Google Maps claims that the time is about the same (and the distance 100 miles shorter) to take Hwy 97 all of the way to where it hits I-5 (Weed) as it does to go via Merritt and Bellingham.

Yeah straight-ish shot, low traffic, even lower enforcement, good view of the mountains from "the other side"..
Did i mention low enforcement?
And no traffic?
