Targa Newfoundland has a TSD class that runs behind the full on class. Roads are still closed, yada yada.
Actually the Targa TSD class (Grand Touring) is run ahead of the faster Targa class on the same closed-road stages. Having competed in both the GT and full Targa classes, I can tell you that GT is in many ways a much bigger challenge than the full on Targa class. Because full safety gear is not required for GT, only helmets and fire-extinguisher, top speeds are limited to a more sane pace. But the twisty (and thus slower) in-town stuff is run at equally near-impossible speeds.

Is puttering along a clean gravel road at 50 or 60 km/hr challenging in even anything?
If it is a "clean" gravel road, then puttering along at 60 km/h may not present much a driving challenge. In that case, to make things more difficult, the TSD organizer will typically create more of a navigational challenge for the co-drivers.

But not all TSDs are run on clean roads. Not so long ago the Ontario Winter Rally (TSD), using many of the Tall Pines roads, was so popular that the organizers were forced to limit entries to no more than 60 teams, typically with a sizeable waiting list after that. This event regularly drew competitors up from the USA, including John Buffum and Paul Choiniere.

"Puttering" was not how anyone would describe this all-night event.

The subject is "How did it occur" and "How can it be done again ---in a similar manner".

The organizers of the Shannonville Stages Rally (April 12, 2014) are planning to include a TSD category this year.

Yep!

And given the need for new seats, and belts, and "stuff" We're hoping to run the Justy in it to get some testing done fore cheap before we hit stages again!

a bad day of brisk tsd rally is better than not rallying at all!

As always, happy to be corrected by someone who's been and seen.
Running ahead of the targa (or stage) cars is clearly the best way to do it, and was how we were planning on doing it for Targa Canada West.

We sure did. 12 Performance entries and 8 TSD entries.

From the responses from competitors it sounds like it was well received. I understand that 2 more Ontario regional rounds will be trying this type of things as well. The single stage Lanark Highlands and Galway Cavendish Forest Rallies (May and August). Neither event is known as a car breaker so should be interesting to see.

lower entry fee, lower cost of car prep sounds like a winner

Here's the video I did of last weekend's Shannonville Stages Rally using my R/C quadcopter.

I just finished editing a similar video of the TSD Salmon River Rally held the same day. I hope to get that one uploaded later tonight.

I didn't notice at the very beginning the first time I saw the video. I think I know some of those guys in the tower.

Yup, that's Peter Watt and the gang.

Here's the aerial video of the TSD rally, 2014 Salmon River Rally. No cages required, any street car can enter. So, obviously, reduced speeds where precision timing is the goal.
