It also stands as the first time I know of in US rallying that someone actually got burned while in the car. Not sure how bad, heard it was face and hand on his codriver.

Interesting to see the outline of the balaclava on her face.
Looks like both hands were burned worse, but hard to tell with the bandaging. She says its healing well, but sore.

Apparently something let go in the back end, followed by rapid onset of fire. Best guess, from 14 hr drive away, would be what-ever let go punctured the fuel cell.

Driveline came apart , ruptured fuel tank (stock saddle tank I was told) and the rest is history. Rhianon didn't have gloves on because of handling the notes. Both had full face helmets. Car went up very very quickly.

Crazy! I guess we'll have to stop saying there is no reason for silly suits now. I'd say it's amazing that a broken prop shaft could puncture the tank but then I thought about it and it's probably not that amazing. I wonder if that's a benefit to the Dave Kern layer the Kevlar straight onto the tank method of protection.

A few of us were talking about the fire the other day and came up with at least a couple more instances where significant fires had broken out where there was a real risk of the car burning to the ground. In at least one of those, at a local regional rally, the fireproof race suits did their job.

Makes me wonder if driveshaft hoops are a worthwhile investment.

Cameron's Ford at Ojibwe last year. Although they were safely out with plenty of time.

Actually like everything else its easier to do a loop on RWD...and the mess a broken half-shaft or failed inner CV leaving a whole long side half-shaft flailing around is pretty damn scary...

Knowing the blue cars quite well, I'd suggest it was probably a half shaft, not the drive shaft, IMHO.
On second thought, maybe I'm wrong. I'd have to look closely.

Report from the scene of the crime said driveshaft. I'd suspect no one stuck their face under there at the time to confirm tho...

Ruptured tank, burning liquid on the ground and in the ditches, nothing I ever want to encounter myself. I watched a cell phone vid of the fire yesterday and it was simply astounding how ferocious it was.

Just as bad as Cameron's. Half a dozen or more fire bottles didn't do jack.
