OK lets see if somebody can post up a table showing typical traditional gears and final drive for
what the goal is, which is to say start with the pinnacle of perfection then the intermediate steps like VW and Opels early and late gear kits and final drives...

Also -I'm thinking we might be wanting to figger' a targeted caged weight ,bhp's and
what the engine redline is-no?

Oh..and tire diameter...

Mfactory has this nifty gear calculator we might use:

http://www.teammfactory.com/gear-calculator

Attempted to attached a screenshot...never done that..

Just as an example..for my 2.3 powered Focus..when and if its time for stage rally I figure I'd go with the most affordable option, which is the mfactory 3rd,4th,5th close ratio set..added to my already purchased 4.06
final drive...or possibly stepping up to the mfactory 4.75 final drive as well.

Since the 2005 and up mtx75 came with a slightly taller 1st(3.420 instead of my 3.670) seems like it might be nice to throw that in at the same time so 1st is slightly less useless...

So:

1st 3.420
2nd 2.136
3rd 1.690
4th 1.370
5th 1.140
final drive 4.06 or 4.75

Crap it made me resize it and you can't read the mph anymore...
I went with a somewhat conservative redline and the tire size is my cone squisher
195/60/15's...

This is what the graph shows..I'm not sure what's up with those shift point #'s though...

gear # mph shift point

1st 3.420 36
2nd 2.136 58 4333
3rd 1.690 74 5523
4th 1.370 91 5712
5th 1.140 109 5845

final drive 4.06

Mike suggest you choose gravel tire sizes and further suggest starting with something known, hence the suggestion of Escort. And I suggest gear x final =xxx

Like; 2.25 fist x 5.1 final= 11.47 overall

1:1 4th (or 5th) x 5.1= 5.1 overall

Then when you do the alternate you have a better comparison

just try 5th with that 1.14 x 4.75 = 5.41 overall..
That's short and you better have a screamin revver

Gotta have a baseline of what to start from..

Now imagine 1.14 x 4.2 =4.78 not toooo bad. 7000rpm will get you over 105mph with a 62cm tire (which is a tire aimed at cars with around 185-200 bhp in the old Michelin 14/62 x 15)

for giggles, here's the ratios for the Fiesta R2 gearbox, with the three different final drive options.

For giggles lets put a SADEV sequential in the focus and put R2 badges on it when I'm done

That's great---knowing as we do those are for a 1600cc n.a. motor..
See where it shows in the gearing?
