Infinite Series ATTN GRANT
October 28, 2014 11:54PM
Hey, random question, do you use infinite series in your work? I seem to recall you doing something with stats and numbers, but I've never taken a stats class and didn't know if maybe being able to estimate a function with a series would be applicable?

To those who are lost, this is the first bit of calc 3.

They can be incredibly helpful when using computers to crunch numbers for you, or when you need to estimate something complex using more basic math.

I haven't had to use them in code for years (3+), so I would probably have to relearn everything... Again.

Yes. Stats is all infinite series and integrals.
L'Hopital's rule is useful.
As are many others. Prove monotone convergence and you can switch order of limit and summation/integration then use of L'Hopitals gets easier.

Your ability to use and understand stats terrifies me.

Actually, 53% of all statistics are meaningless.

I have also heard that 63% of all percentages used in conversations are made up.

I can't even spout real statistics and have anyone believe me anymore.
But I can prove the central limit theorem. And I declined a paid ride for my PhD to pursue other ventures. I might go back for it though I think I might focus on more theoretical mathematical pursuits instead. Like in 5+ years when the kids are more independent and not nearly as fun to spend 90% of my time with.

Hey, every week that goes by they become MORE fun to be around....I introduced mine to Calvin and Hobbes at maybe 3 and we spend lots of time reading and cracking up..Reading together all in the big bed is so cool...Nothing is cooler than that.
It just keeps getting more interesting

Hmm crazy. So there is an actual application of inf series outside of programming computer functions grinning smiley

This was the first time in a LONG time that I'd asked "What is this useful for" during class ha
