First time out: Car acting funny, broke a strut in half, elected to leave early.

Second time out: Exploded a brake hose on parade lap.

Third time out: Exploded upper radiator hose during first run. Spent rest of first heat staring at the car, then trying to find a mythical local AutoZone, where I got the bits I needed to connect the thermostat housing to the radiator, and I capped off the third hose with the car's jack handle. Was able to compete in afternoon runs. Won my class by 20-25 seconds despite a string of bogey times from the AM session. 2nd place was a really nice looking EP3 Civic Si on brand-new Black Rockets.

Well, okay, maybe the car might not be all THAT bad.

I would've figured Anders would sound more like this:

SO as it turns out a 2 liter at 4psi boost is dull no matter what you do.

Popped a manual boost controller on it. Oh hello, we have acceleration!

And nobody makes good suspension parts for Evo III anymore but enough bits interchange with old Colts/Mirages that I was able to find cheap adjustable struts for the thing.

So, if you replace the bad fuel pressure regulator, replace the shocks and springs with aftermarket ones that don't suck, turn up the boost a bunch with a manual regulator, and listen to Slayer, it can be pretty awesome.

Although I might have been faster with less boost. Lots and lots and lots of wheelspin. Maybe a diff could have helped, I dunno, nobody makes anything for it so the question is academic to the point of being rhetorical. Anyway the handling isn't too scrody and my rally tires fit the car and I got a trophy.

My left knee is so fucked that I can't drive stick anymore. I'm driving my RX-7 right now but that is mostly possible because it is easy to shift without the clutch. Every traffic light is a teeth-gritting event.

The S40 is an automatic, that was all that was ever imported to the US. Fortunately the trans they used (Aisin-Warner AW55) is very nice, a 5 speed with close ratios, a torque converter that is actually looser than the turbo requires so boost is instant at any speed, and some pretty intelligent programming that more or less always puts/keeps the trans in whatever gear you would want it to be in, automatically. I am thrilled with what the programmers and calibrators have done with the thing. It's just a shame that nobody makes a diff for it.

Now, they do make a diff for the MANUAL trans that was used in the later cars, but that is useless for me.

Rallycross where this photo was taken was held in memory of Bob. Bob was an older gentleman who autocrossed for many years, then showed up to a rallycross and was hooked. Went to basically every event held within 300-odd miles of Akron, which encompasses something like four or five different SCCA regions. He eventually stopped running his WRX and started running his winter car, an Acura RL, because, as he told me, it was too much of a pain to swap tires anymore, he just wanted to show up and drive. Sadly, he passed earlier this month. So I felt somewhat duty-bound to show up in whatever I had and just drive the friggin' thing, something I haven't done since last year. It felt good.

I got a friend who has an automatic for my Mazda, probably going to buy it from him and do the swap. Not going to let some bullshit like joint problems keep me away from throwing dirt and gravel.

I'll get it looked at if and when the health care system in the US gets reformed. Until then I refuse to allow any money to enter into that crooked mess on my behalf.

Remove the monopoly protections afforded the medical industry (unlike any other industry) and the problem would instantly be solved.

Given that that isn't going to happen anytime soon... Look into the rapidly growing, healthcare tourism business. It is literally cheaper, in many cases, to book a flight elsewhere and have the work done, all while taking a nice, little vacation.

Knee's feeling better. Apparently it was punishing me for not doing much in the way of motorsports.

Went out again with the Volvo. Collected all the trophies. Felt good.
