on the s4. 01.5 and later got all the updates and little fixes the earlier years didn't get. (updated shift linkage that doesn't bork the 1-2 shift collar, oil lines rerouted to save turbo's etc) I like them a lot, great car but wouldn't touch a salvage title with a 10ft pole. PITA to sell em again. Super solid trans, engine is also solid if maintained well. Timing belt is a pain, get one that is already done.
Volvo wagon I'd rather have a V70 R for just a hair over that kind of money. Mini- Cool but I think you are out of your mind as a daily. Don't you need AC in NC? Toyota- don't know anything about em. Guys that have em love em. Edited 2 time(s). Last edit at 07/28/2015 03:02PM by aj_johnson. |

That is a horrible selection for daily drivers.
The 240 wagon is by far the best, but $5k for a 25 year old car seems nuts. The Audi S WILL require 2-3k EVERY year in maintenance. It's just part of owning a luxury/VAG car. That's why they are cheap. If you know the cars, like are an Audi tech, or you are willing to pay the shop to do so, they are nice. A B6 1.8t six speed A4 is a much nicer daily driver and probably in your same price range. Again, still have the thou or two a year but not as painful as S line. What are you looking for? Fun, unique, economical, comfort? Grant Hughes |

100%. Those are all fun cars, not "get me to work so I can eat" cars.
Eh... it looks really nice. Look at it like it's a $2k beater that someone else did $8k in work and you're getting it half off.
That's most of it. The reason why they are cheap is because they require $2-3k in maintenance (not repairs, just maintenance...) per year and the typical German luxury car owner defers it all because they're cheap. So you are buying someone else's problems. If they maintained it, they wouldn't be selling it (or they'd be asking what it's WORTH) Mind you, I was seriously looking into going into debt to get a (cough) W8 Passat last year... I have a TDI Golf for my daily driver. 40-45 MPG most of the time.
Had I been paying for service I would be just over $2k in the first 18 months. Desperately needs a flywheel and possibly gearbox soon. If you want a VW or Audi, go lease a new one. My sister loves her new Passat TDI with six speed manual. Grant Hughes |

Looking for something fun, decent on gas. Want something old enough I dont have to worry about yearly inspection for long. Inguired on a few 1.8T jetta's and Golf's. Thought about a TDI, but my commute is 15min. Any long distance traveling we do is in the truck. Dont really want to go new, dont want the payments. When we buy a house down here, we are going to get the wife a brand new car. Dont want two car payments.

Yeah like those fucked up Audi V6 and V8 things using the smooth back side of the cam belt to drive water pump deep down in the V..Car is so insulated you'll never hear the idler or rthe water pump protest before it develops a microscopic amount of slop, the roller sags a degree and the belt walks off and either 24 or 36 valves all go boik! Simple problem and its over $4000 to fix cause the ENTIRE nose of the car has to come off to access the water pump and those little Nazi valves were $39 each 6-7 years ago..and man that adds up. A complete nightmare. Seen it too many times. John Vanlandingham Sleezattle, WA, USA Vive le Prole-le-ralliat www.rallyrace.net/jvab CALL +1 206 431-9696 Remember! Yeah but everyone does it that way. The fun ones drive the water pump off of the timing CHAIN. So when the water pump bearing starts to go, the coolant goes into the oil instead of on the ground.
Except you don't. Pull the bumper cover off, replace two of the bumper beam bolts with extra long M8 bolts (I grab them from dead Mazda transmission cases) then remove the rest of the bolts, maybe loosen some wiring connectors from their mountings, and the nose assembly slides forward 4-5 inches. Audi was kind enough to put large S-bends in all the hoses for just this purpose. Takes 5-10 minutes with practice.
