usually a bit easier (12-2)x(5+1)

for a multipe choice option they could do this:

12-2x5+1=
a) 3
b) 51
c) 1
d) 60
e) all of the above

I don't know how to math. Good thing this is America.

P.E.M.D.A.S. (or "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally". A Mnemonic for "Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction" - the order in which teh mathz needz be solveded.

Thus for the "original" problem the answer is "a) 3". For the above problem, the answer is "d) 60".
