Looking for a replacement truck
December 23, 2012 03:51PM
I rolled my truck on the way home from the last rally. Finding a replacement has been like getting a root canal! I thought that I would ask the rally community to keep their eyes out.

What I am looking for:

1st generation Toyota Tacoma, 97 to 04.
Xtra cab
Manual transmission
No rust, no damage, clean title.
Normal mileage
No lifts, no sas, no retarded mods.
Private party sale.
Located within a days drive of Seattle.
Silver, grey, white, green or blue.
I don't care if it's 2 or 4 wheel drive.
I don't care if it's 4 or 6 cylinder.
I don't care if it' a base or TRD.

I have cash and will pay appropriate Blue Book.

I would also be interested in a newer Tacoma if it were an access or double cab manual transmission.

Send me a PM if you have a lead. Thanks everyone!

Robert.

It's just what Robert needs but it's in Jaw-ja....just a little more than an hour out of the radius he's specified.
But it is what he needs!

Robert,
If you see anything down here or slightly south I'll be happy to help out with inspection, purchase and transportation part way north.

Robert if you learn of any worth looking at up my way let me know. I'm happy to put it on the hoist for you and be sure that it is a winner.

What is your realistic budget so I can be keeping it in mind?

Hi John,

It all depends on the model. 12K is not out of the question. I am also pre approved for a sweet loan if needed for a newer truck.

Thanks!

The trick is the 5spd (used to be normal equipment and at was rare) and the no lift. I had a helluva time finding my Silverado that wasn't lifted or screwed up.

Prices are all over the place for Tacomas.

The used truck market is just crazy right now. I have no problem paying Blue Book price for the right truck. The problem is that most people have no clue about the true condition of the vehicle or have taken the time to accurately value it. So many sellers think that they are going to get the same money as dealer is asking.

I am talking to a guy in Monroe who is asking $9500 for a 2003 Tacoma Xtra cab, 4cyl, 4x4. It has 145000 miles on the clock. His wife backed into it the other day and the bumper, grill and hood are damaged. Without the damage, the highest "book" will be between $7500 and $7800. That is a long way for me to talk this guy down into reality.

A new truck is far more atractive than it has ever been for me. The problem is that I don't much care for what they are building these days. I also find it very hard to pay msrp for the privilage of driving the truck off the lot!

I have to admit I have an irrational desire to get a red double cab Tacoma 4x4 stuck shift. Then I look at the sticker price and add another couple quarts of oil to the Legacy's sump.

I made the mistake of test driving a TRD Sport double cab with the six speed. That god dam thing was quick! Just too darn expensive!

I bought a 2010 Silverado 1500 4x4 new when the big rebates were on. Drove it about 3000 miles and traded it back in for a nice 2006 Silverado. Just couldn't warm up to it. Can't see continuing to pay that kind of money for something you just don't like.

People are stupid on the prices for sure. I think they see a dealer add or CL ad and think theirs is worth that, when none of them are. Dealers are usually a couple thou over NADA retail. Silly.

The new Tacos are nice. All around decent. Know a few that wheel them and they handle great. I think, i might be biased, that the 2001 style is the best. Seemed great for everything. Plus, you know where a spare 3.4 is.

I have a coworker thats been up and down about selling her 85. Ive been trying to work on her to see if shed sell it.
