Driveshaft interchangeability?
January 01, 2013 09:44AM
Can anyone confirm that an '83 or later 5 speed Capri driveshaft will mate with a Merkur T-9 25 spline output shaft and that the Capri does NOT have independent rear suspension, so the driveshaft should have conventional (replacaceble) universal joints front and rear??? Not the goofy Merkur "center bearing" set up. Thanks guys.

Why would a Capri have an Inferior Rear Suspension?

Everything Capri is mechanically identical to Mustang. (Speaking of US Capris of course, but you did specify '83-up which should eliminate the Euro ones)

It's a fox body, it will not mate to a T9... The T5/C4/Aod use a 28 spline output shaft/yoke.

Ok guys.
Maybe I need to rephrase the question to get a workable answer. I'm building a 1300# car using a 2.3 L. Turboford engine and Merkur T-9 transmission with a 25 spline output shaft. This car has a 7.5" Mustang solid rear axle with a pinion flange pattern having a 3.5" B.C. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to connect part "A" (the tranny) to part "B" (the rear diferential) about 23" long for less than the $330 quoted by a driveshaft shop?? Please see attached pix. I have the Merkur shaft so I have a useable female spline pc. that could be machined and welded to the proper driveshaft universal yoke, or start with the proper yoke/universal to match the T-9 and weld the correct rear "U" joint yoke for the Ford rear.

Sell the Type 9, convert to T5?

Anything for a custom driveshaft for imports is insanely expensive in the US. That's just how it is. I was quoted $480 for a driveshaft to put a Mazda transmission in my RX-7. From where I'm sitting, I don't see a reason to be married to a transmission that will be expensive to implement and may become a liability.

Thanks for your input guys. Sounds like I may be way further ahead to swap for a stronger T-5 tranny and that would give me the option of building a driveshaft using the Mustang shaft as a starting point.
Correct front yoke and splines and correct rear yoke for the 7.5" rear I am using. Should be able to source a T-5 (and driveshaft) at the local pick 'n pull for much less than a custom driveshaft. Will need to move the shift lever to the rear of the tranny, but have plans on how to do that.
Thanks again guys,
Don
