Parts Help, Not Rally Related
April 22, 2013 09:05AM
We have a friend with a rescue dog that decided to chew halfway through her driver's side seat belt. She's not exactly swimming in cash so I told her I could replace it but I'm having a bit of difficulty figuring out the correct part.

Right now the only info I have is it's a 2007 Honda Civic (but from what I can tell all trim levels and 2DR/4DR MT/AT all use the same belt) and looking at Honda parts sites it lists two different part #'s:

04818-SNA-A01ZA TONGUE SET, L. FR. SEAT BELT (OUTER) *NH598L* ( ATLAS GRAY ) $231

04818-SNE-A01ZA TONGUE SET, L. FR. SEAT BELT (OUTER) *NH598L* ( ATLAS GRAY ) $140

Only the SNA/SNE differ and I'm not sure why the first is almost $100 than the second. Anyone able to shine a little light?

The plot thickens...

I emailed that place and apparently the seat belt assembly with the pre-tensioner is what Honda calls a "controlled part" so you have to buy those at the dealer, I'm assuming because of the pyrotechnic junk in them. And you need a VIN so I'm waiting on that.

The local U-Pull-It's only have one candidate, a 2008 Civic and what are the chances that thing ended up there without the air bags deploying?

This is getting more expensive by the minute...

Edit: got the VIN, it's a '97 not an '07 as I was previously told. $113 and change and I have one on the way. Oh, got a pick of the damage:

I would advise sort of "hanging" the old one somewhere in there for that horse in the backseat to nibble upon.....

What a good looking dog and an awesome thing to do!

My 2 cents....some good duct tape and a call to the local police just to confirm safety compliance.

A shelter dog can take awhile to mellow in a new environment. smiling smiley

I had a 100lb Great Pyreneese last year around this time as a foster for a weekend. Put him in the back of my BMW and he managed with one paw to break a small $100 spring in the middle console. And then smiled.

Local police can't take the responsibility of saying that belt is safe. Over 1/2 the webbing is gone in that one violated area, so 1/2 the strength is gone at the very least. Duct tape won't replace that.

Replace the belt and get a muzzle for travel. That moose could easily swallow the whole dash if extremely bored. Or get a harness and hook it to the front bumper.

I thought about that after I posted...i.e. the seatbelt in the car does serve a function. smiling smiley Traveling by air too much these days!

Always the option of getting the dog his own car smiling smiley

Does anyone have magic access to service manuals for a '97 Civic? I'd like to know the torque specs on the bolts that hold in the seat belts.

Thanks!

Picked up the part today and just opened the box. Honda was kind enough to enclose the salient service manual pages with step-by-step instructions so this should be a walk in the park.

Last question: Blue Loctite on the fasteners or no?

I would say yes only because it's a safety component and I cannot imagine it needing to be removed anytime in the near future. Rather that it shouldn't have to be removed.

Can you see the future? 2500lbs, 6 puck unsprung clutch, 8lbs flywheel, Straight cut H22 trans, all tied to a Supercharged Stroker F25B2 that throws dirt? I THINK I CAN!

New belt went in weeks ago, no Loctite, just torqued to spec. I think Luigi lost his "unattended in car" privileges so hopefully won't be doing this again anytime soon.
