OK Cali and Oregon people! Question...
May 27, 2013 01:30PM
My cousin was telling me about some electricity project they've got going on down there between around the Hood area to somewhere just off the cali coast...

Apparently they're shoving giant metal rods in groups into the earth to use the ground as a conductor of power in the event an earthquake destroys power grids down there. There is one giant group of conductors in oregon, and the other off the coast of cali.

Anyone know what he's talking about. We tried to find more information on it, but we couldn't really figure out what search terms to use.

You sure it's not for "Bonding" on a large-scale? Earthing/Grounding essentially is the end-point for 'lectrickery. Rock and soil is not nearly conductive enough for a "directed" current.

Even Tesla eventually gave up on airwave-transmission of power, too.

I know at one point edison (the company) made an attempt at a single conductor DC power system using the earth as a return. It nearly bankrupted them when the govt said no to the single conducter and had em add a return path.

All I was told, and that he could remember, is that they've figured out a way to shoot it into the ground with one side, and bring it back up with the other.

It's not perfect. It's very lossy, but in an emergency, it works - That's basically what he was told.

Tesla Coils worked too.... Though with considerable losses.

My google-fu says it's HVDC transmission.

Maybe an upgrade or addition to this?

The grounding system at Celilo consists of 1,067 cast iron anodes buried in a two foot trench of petroleum coke, which behaves as an electrode, arranged in a ring of 3,255 m (2.02 mi) circumference at Rice Flats (near Rice, Oregon)
