Battery jump boxes

Anyone have a brand or similar that they like? One that is self maintaining would be good since we're part time shop, full time dead cars. Though unplugging the Terrortrip helps on one of the cars. SHould probably unplug it in all of them come to think of it.
Something like this...

Does it have to be portable? I went with a plug in dealie from Sears on wheels.

Something like this one:

Has worked well for a couple years maintaining my fleet of junk. smiling smiley

Grant,
I use these.. http://www.amazon.com/Schumacher-PSJ-2212-ProSeries-Starter-Portable/dp/B000N4UQL6

It is the only one I've found to be better than throw away. Screaming deal and I just ordered another for the shop just now....so thanks for making me do a search! Last one I bought from my big parts distributor 2 years ago and it was nearly $200 then.

Thanks Gene. I probably should have just addressed the title to you since your opinion would direct my purchase anyhow. Thanks again!

Grant I use the hell out of the one from costco. If you ever get to a point where you don't trust it they will exchange it for the current model no questions asked. I think it runs 80$ or so.

Why not put the Terrortrip on power that's not always on and then off a relay?

Why not just get a cheap battery and get a trickle charger for it? Then just use jumper cables. Or, cut off some ends from jumper cables and put them on the battery permanently?

Always be mindful of spiking electronics whilst boosting cars. Seen a couple of expensive failures recently.

Apparently Scott was thinking the same thing and bought one already.

You can use a standard battery and trickle charger, mount on a cheap hand truck. Portability offsite sucks. You can't easily run down town to help a customer , you can't easily toss it in a service vehicle.

The 2212 has an on/off switch (helps with errant sparks) a volt meter to check charging and the obligatory power outlet for 12v accesories. It charges quickly and I've started dead diesels with one. The next size up is quite expensive and weighs a ton as it has two batteries in it.

We've run over one, worked for several more years. My battery is dying in the one I have now, but I have a new battery on the shelf to install. They will charge a car battery if left hooked up and plugged into power. They DO NOT like being left in the rain. The processor inside will go away faster than JV rubs on abandoned Volvos...

They are also very handy when used with a Power Probe ( http://www.amazon.com/Power-Probe-Ultimate-Automotive-Electrical/dp/B000KPU8MK ) for doing electrical work . The power and portability are huge benefits when using in a commercial environment.

Scott got some new lithium one. Super small and lightweight. Apparently the Ford guys up the street jumped 8 dead diesels with one and were on the way to jumping the 9th when the cables started on fire. Guess he's been trying to get one for months but all the shops have been also so they've been backordered.

Okay, I understand there is a large differnce between hill climbs and rallies. However, what would be the reason to not run the power off of the car which is not powered when the car isn't running?

It wouldn't keep the calibration. So everytime you turn off the car, you'd lose calibration. You'd also lose track of your distance and such, which probably isn't as big of a deal as long as you don't stall the car or turn it off on transits.
