However, what would be the reason to not run the power off of the car which is not powered when the car isn't running?

It wouldn't keep the calibration. So everytime you turn off the car, you'd lose calibration. You'd also lose track of your distance and such, which probably isn't as big of a deal as long as you don't stall the car or turn it off on transits.

So....... what happens when the battery DIES?

Why not put the fecker on a switch?

Should not sit long enough to die at a rally. But have the car sit for a month and it will slowly drain it. The OL Subaru had like 35-40 mA draw with it plugged in, 10-13 without.

A switch is just another failure point.

Solve problem -- throw away terrortrip. Buy Brantz. Co-driver may even buy YOU beers.

How have people been liking the Monit? I was planning on buying a Brantz for it's simplicity in the coming weeks but might be chaning plans if I can be convinced otherwise...

A Terratrip shouldn't lose its calibration with the loss of power. TOD will freeze without power, which is super annoying since in some situations it could be a few minutes off with no indication, can't recall what happens to distances.

Monit looses distances when power is cut.

Wherever possible, run full time power to your odos... unplug them for storage and have calibration factors written down somewhere in the car.

No a TerrorTrip will conk out minutes before Parc Expose on your first rally and you'll end up begging a spare off a worker that's a slightly different model and have to figure out how to calibrate it on the first transit. OK, maybe it conked out during the practice stage, my memory is a bit fuzzy, but for my one co-driving experience Adrian Wintle loaned me his spare TerrorTrip. Should I mention that on landing the jump in one of the rotating pictures above (blue Saab 99), we nosed in so hard the thing ended up in my lap? grinning smiley

I should hope the hell not. But that was not to what I was referring.

Mil-spec, steal something out of a nearby Army helicopter, unplug it, pull the fuse, wotevadafock.....

OR, invest in a consumer or homemade "jump box", or a trickle charger. I have one on every moto, makes a "one year" motorcycle battery last 3 to 6 years.

I'm starting to see more people do the ipad/phone route with a bluetooth GPS adapter and a rally app. Apparently working really well, and only $30-40 when all said and done. If I ever buy/build a car without a rally computer, I am probably going to go that route. Thankfully all my cars already had computers in them.
