I was telling JV about this book on the phone the other day.

John and I debated this book on happiness some years ago.

One message that sticks with me today is how our mind always thinks to the future to what we believe will make us happy and then once we have it we realize it rarely makes us as happy as we thought it would. Translating in a sense to say we really don't know what makes us happy which in turn makes it really challenging for each of us to find our own true and real happiness.

Here is another perhaps more relevant book I haven't read yet but have in my collection:

Anne,

reminds me a little of http://www.amazon.com/Temptation-Finding-Self-Control-Age-Excess-ebook/dp/B005GSZI9E where the author talks about the human mind not being good at understanding its future self, or even understanding that its future self is the same person as our current self.

We thus do many things today that will not lead to happiness in the future.

Thanks Derek,

Looks like a really interesting book. I'm not sure if I'm alone with this feeling or not but I've got to believe that the human mind has such a difficult time with imagining the future self because it's a scary and uncertain feeling and requires life planning skills throughout your 20s, 30s, 40s and beyond. Parents get you to 20 and then after that we are expected to figure it out, our own path. I think for many it's far easier to live in the moment (immediate gratification, guaranteed short-term happiness) We do things that make us happy now because that's all we know for certain others maybe can't imagine future happiness. ? I dunno smiling smiley Thanks for sharing....

I read the intro last night. Looking forward to reading the book but also looking forward to reading the original articles that they published and are included in appendix.
