Apparantly Chris Sanborn is selling a car that you have had some dealings with? I found this odd I thought you two were on good terms.

Quoted from SS:

Hey everybody, I have here a 88 XR4Ti that's in typical eastern condition, crusty rockers but I've driven much worse. This car has a JVH rebuilt 2wd cosworth motor that was supposed to be complete but was far from it and the rebuild I have some serious doubts about it. Scamlandingham took these people for a ride and I stepped in to help them out seeing how I'm so entenched in the cossy stuff. I sourced another , well almost $4k in parts and two weeks of time making the car run and drive under it's own power. I built a full 3 inch mandrel bent(including down pipe) exhaust all the way out the back. After getting it to run and making sure everything that is major worked, I basically stopped there. The bill was getting rather large at that point and now they want to unload it. I said I would put it up for sale for them so I can answer all your questions. The car needs to be finished, which is make all the wires nice and a good tidying up before I would put it on the road. That price is less then the parts they have into it. They want it gone now and they would entertain all offers so be quick about. My number is below so you can call and I will give you the whole story. My e-mail discipline is pretty bad so it's better to call. If you come up and look at it, I'm NOT an alcohol free shop, just to make sure you haven't heard any different.
Cheers,
Chris

And it would appear another thin-skinned e-thug has convinced forum moderators that JVL is a bad, bad man who should be banned from another forum. This time, turbobricks.com.

What a crock. Here's one of the greatest champions of the Volvo performance community in North America and, despite his obvious wealth of knowledge and willingness to share it with others in the interest of more people getting more mileage out of their projects, he's shown the door.

Bullshit.

Matt,

JVL can't defend himself at the moment and you don't know what his part of the work was until you talk to him. God only knows who-did-what-when or after he was done. It's unfair to blind-side him here, or on any other forum.

Quit being a Dork and stop your allegations. Now you owe him an apology.

What did you do now? & years ago?

Yeah Matt.
Its the tail of woe and intrigue.
Graham Cullen "Graminal " is friends somehow with this guy Dan Fitzgerald who he'd convinced that a 2wd Cossie motor would be From Massachusetts.the hot thing.
I told Graham I was sceptical on several grounds but primary was the kid was A) from Massachusetts, cool smiley living at home, C) from Massachusetts, D) a 18-19 year old from Massachusetts

But Graham assued me "he's a good guy, not like all the other Massholes" and there would be no problem with payments or arguments.

So we found a shell, Graham helped the kid strip it, I got a bunch of cage kits, sold him an FIA spec cage kit for like $350, LENT my rotisserie built just for Xratties to the the kid, LENT the "deathray gun" so they could clean it
LENT the kid my tube notcher so the could get ready to do the cage and then somehow against all reasoning went up to the punks parents place and welded in the front portion of the cage figuring Graham and he could do the rear portion.

Now the bad blood began when the kid wanted the motor done NOW!!! Whah!!!!!
I ws living out there but had begun the move out here, and the engine didn't arrive till July 01 and get stripped till August (I did have to get UNFUCKING PACKED, and somewhat settled into a NEW HOUSE and NEW garage) and of course i had to examine the core motor. It needed guides and rods and mains and valve grind and some repairs and improvements to the water passages (corrosion) and some signs of detonation--all taken care of.

In the mean time I'm getting emails asking "Where's my engine? I've paid all this money and I have nothing to show for it" Now this is pre "attachments" for me so I can't just send photos as easy as now so I don't know what to say to counter his INCESSANT and ANNOYING WHINING.

Now as usual for rebuilds I warn that I will do what the motor NEEDS and NOT TAKE short cuts and I explain why: if I do less that a full proper job, even if I warn LOUDLY AND CLEARLY that some things will want finishing I WILL BE FORCED TO LISTEN TO WHINING FOR YEARS and that therefore I will not say what the HARD and FAST FINAL PRICE will be BEFORE TEARDOWN AND EXAMINATION.

Whatever.
When it's all done and time to send on the truck to Massivetwoshits, then the fun begins because it's Daddy who has to pay and he's saying "send it out, we'll pay just as soon as we get it in our (slimey fawkin Masshole) hands because YOUSE GOTTS TO ADMIT (with especial tone on admit) that we've paid AAAAAAAAllll dis money and we have nothing at all to show for it so naturally we're suspicious.

Naturally you're suspicious because you're a slime ball fuck masshole contractor who obviously intends to fuck me for final payment since he's like nearly every masshole I've encountered, he's a coward and a liar and will only rob you when you have no recourse , so I say "Naturally?, naturally???, wait, what about the remaining bill for welding the fuckin cage in that I never got paid for? FOUR WHOPPING billed hours for what was leave home at 4 PM , drive way the fawk to their house 45 miles away and weld, getting home at midnight?"

Pops: "Oh well we taked to a guy who has a friend that he saud would do it for like 50 bucks!"

Punk-ass kid: "You want PAY for welding the cage in? PAY!!!!????? You came up to MY HOUSE and used MY ELECTRICITY, and MY welder, and ATE MY FOOD! And YOU WANT PAY!!!?? (in the most aggrieved, and pitiful tone you can imagine)

I point out to the "genious" that: The Welder was GRAHAM's, the rotisserie is MINE, the house, the electricity is DADDY's, and the FOOD, prepared by Mom, paid for by Daddy, was a BREAK that he and graham NEEDED, not me, and that the food--a couple of bugers, were OFFERED polietly by MOM, and i was unaware they were "for sale".

You can see where this was decending to.

Anyway, I had agreed to talk ONLY WITH the KID and NOT with any other party, not with DAD not with the fucking guy who knows the welder etc.

EVENTUALLY the motor was sent CERTIFIED check required, and never heard a peep
till now.

Graham says "I don't want to get in the middle of this! You're both my friends"
I say "I ONLY DID THIS because you assured me he wasn't a typical piece of shit Masshole"

And it turns out he and his dad especially were or are just that, typical slimey lying Masshole losers willing to try to fuck everybody, even those who help them.
That didn't surprise me in the least, it's the norm there.

What Sanborn knows, doesn't matter, he knows half the story from one side only but that's enough for him to make a snap decision and for him to slander. Whatever.

Rich, Matt was just asking, not taking sides. ASKING makes all the difference in the world, stting things as flat facts, as Sanborn did, is totally lame, and doing it as a slanderous attack when he himself KNOWS he only knows half a story, rellay shows Sanborn's character as much as anything else.

So I don't think Matt owes me an apology, but Sanborn does and my friend Graham Cullen does too for NOT clarifying this MESS that he knows far too well every stupid aspect of since he was in the middle from day 1.

Graham has already said "I don't want to get in the middle of this cause you're both my friends"

Loyalty is admirable but speaking the truth is more admirable than "easy' noncommittal type loyalty.

Re: What did you do now? & years ago?

Well John,
I wasn't going to join this forum because Andrew thought it would be a good thing. Sort of like "here, hold my beer and watch this" type of scenario. Seeing how I am being called a slanderer I decided to take the plunge and sign up. I guess I will have to let people know what I think is not a complete rebuilt motor. I talked to Dan senior, the guy who paid for it, and he said that this motor was a completely rebuilt motor, which was complete to drop in a car, nothing else to buy. Well, I was skeptical when there was no dipstick installed, clue number one. When I tried to start it the injectors were frozen, even jumping them they didn't work. I've had injectors do that but they had been sitting for years and they were on an audi shitbox, enough said. After getting the motor to start, motor oil was blowing out of the oil cap, I was curious on what Audi you took that off of, I've never seen one shaped like that, it must of come off an old 100ls back in the 70's. I didn't know they fit but they surely don't seal. It would of been nice if you used all the bolts to secure the intake manifold, 2 were missing, you know the long 6mm X 1.0 ones on the lower section of the intake. Oh, I didn't use your bastardized remote filter set up either, I converted it back to stock. I couldn't guarantee which plug you put in the remote housing was correct so I didn't mess about and just replaced it. My escort cossy is stock and that was put together by M-sport so it is good enough for me, they would of changed it if there was a benefit. The main reason why I think you didn't do a proper job on the motor is that when I started the motor, get up to temp, then checked the oil. It was filthy, I've rebuilt motors before and there is always a little tinge to the color with all the start up lube on the bearings. They certainly don't make the oil dirty, my guess is you never cleaned the oil galleries properly. I send mine out to get properly cleaned instead of using a can of carb clean from walmart. Now those were just the blatant bits, if you a better list I will go through my records and show it all, I know how much you charged them and I thought the guys in B.C. were pricey, they show you nothing. You didn't even include a map sensor, amplifier,or nothing to connect to the engine harness, which I supplied from my spares. The list could go on and on of all the small parts that were missing but that would take forever and I am running out of guinness.
So, if you would like to discuss character I would truly enjoy that. Especially if you want to talk about what you did to me. I guess you will attack by calling me a fucking asshole and all that and I really don't mind. I deal in the facts and the facts will speak for themselves. I know a lot of rallier's out there and they know my reputation, I might be a hardass prick but I'm honest. So have fun everybody watching this mess unfold.
Cheers,
Chris

Re: What did you do now? & years ago?
June 14, 2008 02:49AM
Chris, look at the back of the block, it's is drilled and tapped for a NPT plug rather than the original steel ball.

Now why would I go to all the trouble of knocking out the steel ball, drilling and tapping the thing if I wasn't going to specifically clean the oil galleries?

That doesn't make sense, and so when you state bullshit as you just did it sorta shows you're just blowing shit.

As for a dipstick, it had the tube and stick when it was loaded onto the truck to go out east, can't say what happened in the intervening years gbefore you got hold of it.
I know it did cause I used all the tubes I had and had to buy more for the other blocks I have had since.

As for anything else missing, had Dan acted like an adult, and Dan is who I had a deal with, not his daddy who WAS trying to screw with me, all that would have been needed was a simple phone call, but when THEY clearly were trying to get me to ship without paying and crying such crocodile tears for 4 hours of welding and dragging payment out by months, then they lost all consideration.
I have, and had, extra injectors, map sensors, and even exhaust manifolds--

but I won't deal with Daddy who was simply too slimey, and too much bullshit--like the stuff about "that's too much for the cage cause a budy of a friend said he'd do it for way less'---which begs the question whay didn't they do it there instead of prevailing on me if "some guy said his buddy would do it for less"?

You were called a slanderer cause that IS what you did Chris.

Just answer me this: how many years did that motor sit around before it was installed and actually fired up? 5? 6?
Where did it sit?

It was tanked, cleaned and oiled up internally but gimme a break, who knows what it would like internanally after all that time.

You can't keep everybody happy all the time and I certainly ain't happy with the time i spent trying to talk sense into the kid who had wandered off and lost interest as soon as he went to Colorado to play going to college.

And you gain nothing Chris by talking shit about something you are only half informed of.(Such as the daddy trying to get me to ship without paying for the motor and esentially admitting he didn't intend to pay)

And as for the oil cap, give me a break, that's a standard DIN fitting and is used on dozens of applications from gas tanks to oil fillers for BMW, VW, Ford, Opel, Mercedes, and on and on. What's the problem with just grabbing another for a buck somewhere?

You and I don't have anything to discuss.
Partially because discussion means back and forth and give and take and a little less than simple black and white, and you do tend toward jumping to conclusions and then that's it and all discussion afterwards if pointless.

I appreciate the help you extended to me at a time when I was in really bad shape .
We were square as soon as I was back, and that's nearly 10 years ago, let it drop.
This was closed in 2001 or winter just after, and i have no desire to banter about it with you for your amusement.

Well John,
I think Dan sr. is a pretty fair guy and I wouldn't call him slimy. You probably wouldn't talk to him because he saw right through your act. As for a slanderer, I guess telling people the truth about what you do would pretty much qualify me as that. Let me give a little more slander about how you squared up. It was after I called you 3 times(left messages with no return calls) saying that I found a cancelled check for a deposit that I double paid you for is when I never heard from you again, I would say that is finishing up, priceless. I should of known after you called from the UK and asked if you could put 600 on my credit card. I wasn't sure if it was pounds or dollars but when you rang up 3 times that amount( I still have the statements in my records) without my permission that should of thrown up a big flag. Yes, you did pay it off a few months later after I asked you to but that isn't the case. So I really have no faith in your word on how you built this parts motor and yes I found the return fitting but that wasn't the fitting in question. So there is my intention of always jumping to conclusions, I have a nasty habit of that. Yes, I suspect you will go on and on even though you think this is for my amusement. I just don't want anybody to make the mistake that I did, embarrassing as it may be for me to tell. You can believe me that this isn't banter but this is my ending, no discussion.

Chris you'd better not talk poorly about JVL's character or his workmanship because the site administrator will throw you in the "sin bin".

Everything you've mentioned sounds all too familiar.
