Shit, I have no idea.
All I know is someone always thinks there's something coming that will "save rally". Whether it's x-games, more spectators, less spectators, pastrana, subaru, the internet, green cars, motorcycles, umbrella girls, 90210 actors, fancy stickers, a tv deal, awd, 2wd, groupf, bigger turbos, no turbos, new manufacturer, overseas competitors, the WRC, the IRC, twitter, five day events, rallysprints.... (some/many/all of these _have_ had a degree of positive impacts) Here's one of my favorite quotes/paraphrases, it's from HL Mencken "To every complex question there is a simple answer and it is wrong." How to build this sport up is certainly a complex question. There is a large base of legal, safety, promotional, psychological, historical, relationship, and monetary issues that combine to make any particular event happen, and they all change as you move from event to event! Rally is sustained now and will be in the future by the same thing that has sustained it in the past: lots of people with a passion for the sport working hard to make sure it happens. I don't believe that there is a magic bullet that will bring rally to supersport status. First, the competition against other sports is too high. Rally will never get past, say, women's beach volleyball. I mean, jeez, what a perfect storm of promotional possibility that is. Women, in bikinis, jumping around. And hugging each other. Versus a car on a dirt road? Good luck! 
Secondly, the activities available to any individual to participate in have ballooned in the last 15 years. The ease of finding out about other things to do has, with the internet, become so much easier. To a degree this has helped rally too, but every person exposed to rally on the internet is also exposed to xtreem skateboarding, xtreem kite surfing, xtreem motorcross, xtreem p0rn, and Hulu. (And, in the future, one can assume xtreem Hulu.  ) So at every turn they are bombarded with other cheaper/free activities that are more accessible.
The second issue is connected to the not yet fully formed "Anders Hypothesis of Media Exposure" which goes something like "Whatever technology or process that is developed to make it easier to distribute promotional information to people only serves to raise people's internal spam filters." Send a newsletter? Now we ignore those. Press releases? Print news papers are closing down. Got a web site? Most people won't read through one now. Myspace, the amazing band promoter? So over it, too much spam. Facebook? "Michelle has taken the 'What toothpaste are you?' quiz and the answer is Crest". Ignore. Twitter? "Now I'm deciding which peanut butter to buy." Ig. ("Ig" is my just-now-created alternative to "Ignore" which has already become boring to read. )
The A.H.O.M.E doesn't say that these things shouldn't be done, it only means that there's no free lunch: there's nothing that will suddenly make reaching many people super easy. It will always take a lot of work. Only the same number of hours used in the past will generate lots more "stuff" (impressions, email, pages, texts, etcetera). So that's my thought. I'd love to hear any ideas people have, especially if they have lots of deep thought in them.
