VSC built a new STI for Vin Diesel. Word is it's going to be featured in some new movie and they've hired Tanner and Ramana (who are doing the stunt driving in the movie) to train him to drive it as they want him to drive in the 2010 RA championship and get into X Games to promote the launch of the new movie.

As absurd as it sounds, I think in this day and age this could actually happen.

I was actually going for serious. I didn't realize I posted it on April 1st.
Vin does have his own video game now though. He did drive my Merkur a little bit last time I saw him and rather liked it.

OK Anders,

You teased us, now I feel like I've been to a gentlemen's club. All wound up and nowhere to direct my pent up ah, energy. smiling smiley

Seriously, or were you just messing with us????

Shit, I have no idea.

All I know is someone always thinks there's something coming that will "save rally". Whether it's x-games, more spectators, less spectators, pastrana, subaru, the internet, green cars, motorcycles, umbrella girls, 90210 actors, fancy stickers, a tv deal, awd, 2wd, groupf, bigger turbos, no turbos, new manufacturer, overseas competitors, the WRC, the IRC, twitter, five day events, rallysprints.... (some/many/all of these _have_ had a degree of positive impacts)

Here's one of my favorite quotes/paraphrases, it's from HL Mencken "To every complex question there is a simple answer and it is wrong." How to build this sport up is certainly a complex question. There is a large base of legal, safety, promotional, psychological, historical, relationship, and monetary issues that combine to make any particular event happen, and they all change as you move from event to event!

Rally is sustained now and will be in the future by the same thing that has sustained it in the past: lots of people with a passion for the sport working hard to make sure it happens.

I don't believe that there is a magic bullet that will bring rally to supersport status. First, the competition against other sports is too high. Rally will never get past, say, women's beach volleyball. I mean, jeez, what a perfect storm of promotional possibility that is. Women, in bikinis, jumping around. And hugging each other. Versus a car on a dirt road? Good luck! grinning smiley

Secondly, the activities available to any individual to participate in have ballooned in the last 15 years. The ease of finding out about other things to do has, with the internet, become so much easier. To a degree this has helped rally too, but every person exposed to rally on the internet is also exposed to xtreem skateboarding, xtreem kite surfing, xtreem motorcross, xtreem p0rn, and Hulu. (And, in the future, one can assume xtreem Hulu. winking smiley ) So at every turn they are bombarded with other cheaper/free activities that are more accessible.

The second issue is connected to the not yet fully formed "Anders Hypothesis of Media Exposure" which goes something like "Whatever technology or process that is developed to make it easier to distribute promotional information to people only serves to raise people's internal spam filters." Send a newsletter? Now we ignore those. Press releases? Print news papers are closing down. Got a web site? Most people won't read through one now. Myspace, the amazing band promoter? So over it, too much spam. Facebook? "Michelle has taken the 'What toothpaste are you?' quiz and the answer is Crest". Ignore. Twitter? "Now I'm deciding which peanut butter to buy." Ig. ("Ig" is my just-now-created alternative to "Ignore" which has already become boring to read. winking smiley )

The A.H.O.M.E doesn't say that these things shouldn't be done, it only means that there's no free lunch: there's nothing that will suddenly make reaching many people super easy. It will always take a lot of work. Only the same number of hours used in the past will generate lots more "stuff" (impressions, email, pages, texts, etcetera).

So that's my thought. I'd love to hear any ideas people have, especially if they have lots of deep thought in them. smiling smiley

Cheers
Anders
ps: Oooo! I almost forgot to tell you about the idea I just had that will save rally! I have to go get a soda and then I'll put it in my next post!

We have the next, this will save rally, in the works. Hopefully be up and running by Oregon Trails, depending upon my PBR intake over the next few weeks.

Good post Anders!

Actually, it won't save rally. It'll just hopefully make it a little easier to be a fan.

Save rally -> Has it gone "that" far downhill ?

When looking at the 1977 East African Safari video, it's pretty obvious that a helmet, intercom, t-shirt, and a pair of shorts was enough for the "boys" driving the Escort.

It used to be grassroots, entry level racing, low budget fun.

In the 1980's I remeber going to spectate the "Players Challenge Series", which were essentially lightly modified factory ordered iroc's and trans am's. It was a series that was relatively inexpensive to get involved in and the cars were street legal.

Two challenges that seem obvious for rallying are the lack of spectator grandstands, or even being able to charge spectators, which means all the costs must solely be paid for by sponsors and participants.

The other is the cost's associated with building a car, or the potential problems with buying a car that been built and beat on by someone else.

I'd be curious to hear input on the absolute minimum cost it would cost to build a reliable, safe, and fun entry level car. That is if someone was to build a few of the identical car.

An inexpensive base car with staged options putting it into different classes.

I still think that the "Rumours, Lies & Damn Lies" forum folder has the highest potential for real fun combined with real thinking... not many takers though.

yeah, you'd think...

Rallye clubs, keep seeing it mentioned here and there, but no effort. How about deep in the forest, a single stage, 30 milles long, 1-2-3 passes?

Need what 4 people to run the stage as workers?

NO permits

NO insurance BS

NO entry fee

Just pure rallye anarchy, simple.

Beer at the end, camp, talkin shit, shenannigans

Isn't this kinda how it all started??

^^^ Part of me loves this idea (the guy with the +300wtq race car in the driveway)

and part of me hates this idea (the organizer guy/responsible adult).

It would have to be me and 3-4 (max) of my best friends on private land (and a few rally clocks) to ever make it happen. workers not necessary.

ugh.
