I randomly came across a world rally blue WRX for sale on the local racers facecrack page with the following description:
Appeared relatively rust free. I was in quite a big rush to get it, as the chassis alone is worth about $3k around here. So I did last night at 730pm as the first snow of the season rolled in! 
Currently need to decide whether I want to fix and sell it, or build it into a rallycar and sell my current open class car. I think I could build a car that suited my needs for cheaper than the current rallycar, have it built the way I want, and be about as fast. Current ideas involve either a junkyard ej205 with a vf34/vf48 and a 5 speed close ratio dccd, or a full version 8 sti ej207 with twin scroll vf36 and accompanying 6 speed dccd swap just like the current car. Or I could just run a completely stock wrx drivetrain with a 20kg centre viscous diff. If nothing else, TD04's are cheap and they sure make boost quicker than the larger turbos. The version 8 swap is about $6.5k with everything. The junkyard swapping is about $3k. The bone stock wrx drivetrain is $1400 with extra parts I could sell off. All of them I'd probably run race fuel on for shits and giggles.  We'll see how the next little while goes. I'd like to do BigWhite in the black open class car and then maybe sell it after that...

The thought has crossed my mind of keeping it for a spare shell, but realistically, if I wrote off the black one completely, I'd be out for at least a year (not that my record is currently much better haha). I figure I can get this one built into a decent car for $15k, so we shall see! |

You are probably unaware that that cliche phrase--repeated endlessly---is a good deal of why there's only 310-320 maybe kinda "active' participants nation wide. All the countries with fractions of our populations that have multiple more participants, and leaps and bounds BETTER driving--most of then build their own cars MOST..probably more than 85%-88%. Neetronics. My little brain understands it and I find it works well! The 6 speed is also bulletproof. The 5 speeds not so much. One broken dccd 5 speed tranny puts me at the same cost as a single 6 speed dccd if I have to buy a 2nd dccd 5 speed. The gearing of either is acceptable in a turbocharged application... really, its a cost thing moreso than anything else. The 5 speed would possibly have less shifting, I find a lot of useless shifting in the STi with the 6 speed happens.
I'm a realist proponent. I have a girlfriend and lead a relatively unencumbered life with a 38 hour work week. Most people don't have that. If I can barely rally a couple times a year due to time/money, I find it hard to believe a father can get time to build a rallycar (properly, its easy enough to slap a cage, suspension, and skid plates on a car). I'd like to try my hand at building a car the way I want, no corners cut. Strip it down completely and build it back up. I've taken apart every subsystem on a Subaru now, so I am farily confident in taking the whole thing apart. I have time (working way less overtime nowadays) and money is finally going fairly well. The current car is great, I do love it... but I think it may be too expensive for my blood. The current car (if I build it) is free in my mind after selling some parts. $3500 for cage/seats mounts/door sill jacking points. $700 for an ej205. Already have seats. Suspension? $2500 maybe? I have tires and rims. Skid plates another $500? Intercom/rally odo $500? I guess what I am saying is I can easily get it on stage, properly built for under $10k. Thats no ej207 6 speed dccd car, but do I really need that? Who answers that question? I want to rally, and currently can't (much). I don't think I'll lose much speed stepping down spec-wise, maybe even run 91 octane. On top of all of this, we can't import rallycars into Alberta anymore, so there is a SERIOUS lack of rallycars available here, and if they are for sale, they are very high priced. If we could still import from the US, I'd import a car in a second and say screw building! |
