Help me identify this VW 020 diff
January 11, 2015 12:08PM
Getting close to dropping motor/trans into the new Mk2 Golf build... inspecting the trans from the old car before putting everything together.

Can someone help me identify this diff? When I bought the previous car, it was sold to me as "VW Motorsports final drive and LSD".

Full set of detailed pictures here:

Well, I can tell you it is definitely not a KAAZ. Not sure if that helps.

Nice looking diff though. Looks like there are two sets of ramp angles to choose from?

Good luck on the rebuild! I'm guessing you're asking in order to source new clutch plates? Maybe try asking Broke (http://www.brokevw.com/). He is super helpful and knows 020's better than anyone. I use his instructions all the time, and buy all my tranny rebuild parts from him.

I was curious so I did a quick search and found this ad on the vortex that purports to have a VW Motorsport 020 Diff for sale: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread.php?7055168-FS-VW-Motorsport-Limited-slip-differential-020

The casting has 020 409 122 right on it, which matches the part # in the VW Motorsport manual, so seems legit. Doesn't look anything like yours though...

You check the break-away torque? Know how to?

THANK YOU ERIK!!!

I've already sent them the detailed pictures and requested specs on the diff. Looks as if I can get whatever parts I need to rebuild this thing. Also found someone that has an English speaking contact at Bacci, just sent off a message asking for that info as well.

John, the last time this was in a car, it was cartwheeling down a hill. Although I do know how to check it, if it was in a car with axles, I did not check it previously. I assume Bacci should be able to provide me with specs on what it is SUPPOSED to be?

Now that I have the attention of the experts... based on the pictures, do you see anything here that needs to be replaced? I don't think this transmission has been cracked open since 2004!

I'm not sure I qualify as an expert, but I would definitely get new clutch plates. I see there's some wear on one set of ramps. I would figure out what the two different ramp angles are, and decide if you want to use the undamaged ones, or if the damage is significant enough to justify a replacement if you need to use that set.

I would also order replacements for those small countersunk allen wrench bolts. If they're like my Kaaz, they're easy to strip. I'm surprised there's only two.

Edit: Looks like they sell two different rebuild kits on that web page - maybe find out what's in them and the differences between the two.

Those plates and discs are fine, nearly perfect..Maybe a little 180 grit maybe 220 emery on the indise of the pressure rings, and here's a thought___maybe flip the side gears side to side. That way you have a fresh side on the drive direction and the old front drive side becomes the coast side.

More than that is hard to get too wound up from just photos...
