Another VW MKII Golf
February 06, 2015 08:06PM
I guess its time I finely post something, only 9years of lerking.. To make a long story short I have been following rally, ie. volunteering, crewing for a few teams, and a fair bit of spectating for past 10 years or so, I decided I can finely afford to campaign car. I recently picked a MKII Golf out in Boston, like at the beginning of this year. What a bad time to drive to Boston, lucky for us the weather was unseasonable warm and gas was dirt cheep.. With out further ado....

I have been gathering various bits of updated equipment, its like Christmas every few days. Only better because I get what I want!! Watching the forums and reading everything about the VW I decided I was going to go with JVAB and run the Subaru top plates, I gave John V a call and even had TSS make me a setup front shock turrets. I'll post photos of when we start going under the knife.

I was waiting for the nasa scrutineer (visited last night) to come out and just take a quick look over the car to address any issues I could have. Turns out the car is built pretty good, only need to address the fuel lines where they attach to the fuel regulator (easy fix).

My biggest hold up is going to be the suspension, we need to pull and get this shocks sent out to bilstein and then over to John V.

Shafts look good so far, just need to pull them a part. I need to search and see if I can find some information on tearing these down.

Just a little dirty.

FRONTS FIRST see if you can wash 'em till they're germ free..then run the springs down till they're loose.

You probably need the gawddam special too toget the top mounts apart, dumb lil thang looks like this:

Flip 'em over. There's a 17mm nut that you spin off..Then with a 5mm allen screw the rod stickin out IN (clockwise) and when they turn and don't move upward, slide the inserts out...

First thing: wipe 'em off, slide the bump rubber off the rod and put them back into the lower housing and push them in till they bottom, and release.. If they're straight they extend back up..

Whip 'em apart again and wipe everything including the rod off, and really look hard at the rod and see if you can see anywhere where the chrome has been wiped off. If it is any rust on the rod you'll have to get a new rod but they're not bad---$35-40 and we can ask for a bit longer one for say 200mm travel...If its fine then once they're back you'll end up with 188-190 travel..

Rears same thing excpt stop after plunge test.

Get those packed up and sent "Attention Juan Alvarez"

----->OH you might call William back and say its going to be Subie top mounts..If you wanna get fancy he could offset the hole and bolt pattern inboard and towards centerline a bit and you get some neg camber AND the all important castor

Grand stuff, yet another Golf. thumbs up

What make of front shocks are they? Look a bit weird as they don't appear to be big enough in diameter to be the usual 40mm inverted Bilstein style.

John, the front shocks appear to use mk3 top mounts, so won't use the weird castellated nut that retain the mk2 style top mount.

Disappointingly not yet a Jackass

Nice car...

don't ever put coils/springs in the media blaster...

I did that once on a Scirocco, and 20 minutes later realized that I probably just weakened them.

facepalm.. I felt stupid.

Good Luck with the car!

+ I remember the Wimpy's Golf fondley.... it was hella fast and
driven well... that car also had JVL/JABBat A/JVAB suspenders I believe..

And why, pray tell, did some unknown media "weaken" the spring?

Abrasive blasting will weaken the springs a tiny bit. Not enough to wory about. I have glass bead blasted many springs with no problems. Now if the coils are rust pitted that is a different story all together. Corrosion pits are nasty stress risers. The bottom line is the size and shape of the surface imperfections on the spring wire. The deeper and more jagged, the more it concentrates stress.

Abrasive blasting will weaken a spring if it removes steel... If the blast media glass bead, or sand or soda or walnut shells, and takes the paint off, no...

And good point about rust on surface..there are real reasons that the spring is painted/powder coated or in some way the surface gets protection...

Oxy/acet torch is the best way to remove the paint and "improve" the handling.
As Aaron McConnell once said, "It was good enough for racing in the 1950s!"

It was straight-up sand or high-grit somethingoranother, IIRC...

I cannot personally argue yes/no on if that does actually weakening the springs, but at the time I was told that it made sense to me.

John
everything is not a matter of argument and everything is not a matter of opinion..
And all opinions are not equal...
You don't have feel compelled to argue all the time...

So:
the bend modulus for all ferrous metals is the same....even cast iron..
Different ferrous metals have vastly differing fatigue properties tho.

For a spring the overall consideration is simply this diameter of the wire and total length of the wire (so a .500" wire 24 feet long fixed horizontally will deflect X amount if 100 lbs is hung off the end and a piece of .500" that's 6" long fixed horisontally will deflect P amount if the same 100lbs is hung off the end. Then you wind the spring...that 24 foot one will be---for a given overall length and diameter--having a whole lotta coils--and is "soft" compared to the 6" long one.)
Sand, glass beads, even steel shot is not going to REMOVE metal...
If it is not removing metal, it does not do a thing to the spring.

See that? That spring has been media blasted with fine steel balls.
Shot peened
It doesn't make the spring "stronger" but it increases the fatigue resistance...

Here's a nice lonk on springs and shot peening:

That is not arguing people, that was a heads-up/suggestion.... If you don't agree, then you don't agree.

Thanks ?

John again I will quote. And wonder aloud if you looked at anything

Quote

I cannot personally argue yes/no on if that does actually weakening the springs blah blah.

I am trying to say there's something wrong if you think that you must argue yes/no on everything.

And you have been coming around and arguing everything and throwing insults at me fast and furious..

On this it is NOT a matter of opinion. And opinion doesn't change reality if it does or it doesn't "weaken"
Anybody who knows how springs work knows it is not merely "kinda wrong" but hilariously absurd..

If you want to thank somebody then thank somebody for freeing you from a a bizarre belief.

And try and remember that you don't have to constantly argue---especially when you base your opinions on "what some guy said" and whim..

Hey, again... just STFU about arguing..
No Shoulder-chip found here, and I think my record is pretty solid on NOT telling people what to do or not do, cause I done-did it back in the stone ages so-it-must-be-right= always, for everyone..

I was just talking out loud again... without doing my 729 years of research, again.. is that ok with you sir ?!? no? ok, just deal with the fact that not everything is a book report and needs footnotes.

again I don't give a fuck and I don't think I am honestly bothering anyone but you. Are you the fucking forum cop here now ?

_ __ _____ _______ _____ thumbs down ANARCHY!! ... no not really.

* what a total dick you are. Stay off the internet for 10 minutes and build some shit..
Hey, there's an opinion for you, not a fact...
take it any way you like it, sir.

jesus.
