Merkur big brakes
February 10, 2006 11:59AM
How's that project coming?
Any pics of so far?
Last I heard the prototype was looking good and would be able to be used on either Sapphire or XR hub.
Haven't heard anything in a long time and as John and some of the others in the project are around here thought I'd ask here.

First side of the bell is machined, the second side is easy and will be quick.
Found a Volvo perv in Cali who will do the bolt circles cheap-cheap.
Kevvi was kind enough to saw the things but we WE after some serious eyeball to eyeball WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU TALKING LEAVING AN EXTRA xx/XX of an inch!!!!!

As it is they are getting about 3/8s faced off.
LOTS of CHIPS!!!!!
28 pcs made
Skye, Seattle Scott, Paddy will account for 12.
Colin McCleery says he wants more brakes, I want 4.

I'm babysitting on Monday -Wed-Fri since Sweety Wife is at UW now. So that slows things a bit,
I have the material to make "606" copies of the 909 square rear beam to replace the "Oxen yoke" bent thing and to accept the Toyota diff and everything needed to do the beam at the friends in Everette. That's the next thing after the brakes.

Sweet. Can't wait to see how the finished product turns out.
I know I don't have to say it, but you know you can count me in on the rear beam too. Thanks for the update on the bitching brake kit. Got to make a call today after 3:30 about another Merkur that I have a lead on.

Things are starting to look awwfully exciting, what kind of time frame are we thinking about here for my big old boxes to arrive? (Brakes, diff, beam, centre support, IC, intake bits, whateverelseI'mmissing) I mean, are we thinking weeks or months? School starts again in May, which complicates things...

I may have a place in Buffalo to send them to now, or worst case some family in Michigan if we can't make another border run to get it all on Greyhound.

Machining program is done.
I'll plobary run the remaining 27 tomorrow afternoon, the first one is sitting here.
Now a few holes here and there and some short repose in some salt bath while getting electrocuted and they'll be done.

Of course we still gotta order a bunch of discs and fab some brackets for the rear to bolt the super bitching calipers I found which have the right sized pistons _averaged out_

Hoooookay, well you got some brake monies from me, let me know what's required next.

And us Ontarians still need to reason something out about the legal requirement of a second, seperate parking brake, since I'm assuming the wilwood calipers don't have a cable pickup option...

Do you have your Saab radiator w/ fans and mounting bracket made out of alum channel?
RX-7 oil cooler + weld on -6 fittings? Get it all ready to bolt to the cossie IC. Get thee to a junkyard if not..

It's byoooootiful how it all fits together!!

I do have the rad, but I recall some talk about changing the side for one of the ports on it. Was this still done, or did the hose routing plan change?

Skye !!!!

Get those pulleys anodised or cleaned or do something. They reduce the blingfactor.

Stock hoses fit perfectly, it was a stroke of (a) genius (again)

Hey Godlike Moderator.
I think Senor Moderatoro Patio was asking about the little 5/16 pissy hose on the driver's side.
No Patio we're hustling against time so it wasn't moved, it should be.

The pkacement of the expansion tank is pretty loose, I think it depends on using a Volvo turbo expansion tank or the soooooper bitchin ones I made..
In front of the pass side strut tower or behind.
The 5/8th hose goes from bottom of expension tank to "T" into the heater return line.

The 5/16th one goes into the top of the tank, it CAN double back but a bit of soldering and you'll have a neater run.

Hear the one about the Irish guy who stayed out all night and day, even in the rain and snow? Paddy O'Furniture....
