floor mounting seats, need ideas
April 20, 2015 02:27AM
hey guys just finished my floor pans to keep my seat low enough i don't die when my swoopy knuckles spontaneously combust. need some idea's on how to weld completely to the floor the perimeter of the fabbed floor pans, the fit is good on tunnel side and sill side but the droop of the floor plus stamped pleats make it difficult to ties it down as a single entity while keeping a level pan (i could heat it and force it but mounting a seat to a bowed surface seems dumb)
ideas ive had
-make a template of the floor pattern outta cardboard for the front and rear cut the intricate thing out with a torch and hope all goes well
- weld tunnel and sill, try to bash the floor level as possible 1/4 inch almost in a couple places and weld front and rear as well as plug weld through drilled out spot welds and hope this doesn't bow
- run flat bar in grooves, weld to floor then weld plate to flat bar ala plug welds as well as front and rear surfaces filling gaps with tedious welding, this method also ups the weight factor and i feel is a structural patch.

some explanation of pics before i get my throat cut.
has to zip tunnels to narrow tunnel to fit fat seats, structure will be welded from underneath to pans as well as tunnel reinforced from underneath with custom fabbed braces

square or round tubing is not an option as i onlt have 5 1/2 inches to roof with helmet and hans on. (i'm 6'4)

put your name up someplace. There's no thing "heroic" or "ironic' or "making a point.

You have corregartions, its gonna be resting on the high spots.

Zap them down---I assume there is substantial overlapping of the parts----like an inch or so----

Once its tacked on all the high spots, start welding and pound down the thin stuff as you go.
No fun.

You absolutely need to consult with your local scrutineer to determine if your design is legal.

Overlap the metal and then squish it together before you weld. AFTER YOU ARE SURE ITS LEGAL!

This is what I found from my Lemons car build...definitely took a little work to make it work, but passes Lemons tech easy-peasy.

It seems to me that a 6'5" dude should stop trying to rally Hondas and get something with room to spare like an E36 BMW like an adult. smiling smiley

I will not logbook or accept at an event a car with the seats bolted to the floorpan. It is too flimsy.

If you were to make some crossmembers welded in securely to the center hump and outer sill and/or cage, and then made some sort of drop mount so that the seat was securely mounted to them but sat down below their height, I might be ok with that depending on how it was done.

FWIW, I am not a CARS scrutineer. I am, however, a Rally-America and NRS one.

fia documents clearly recognize sandwich plating as acceptable practice when mounting plate is welded to chassis, the plate is protection in case of floor contact. when the tunnel is reinforced from top and undercarriage flimsy won't be the issue..
