I tossed out the factory harness and came up with my own overdone grounding scheme. No need to run a neg cable from battery to engine bay.

Or I could do weld nuts on the inside of the firewall... That would probable be a better connection? thoughts?

I have used weld nuts, the cheap McMaster flanged weld nuts for grounds. Drill or find a hole they fit in, quick zap with spinning wheel to clean paint, quick buzz with mig and voila.

Like 12 bucks for a 100 pack of M6x1.0. Also good for mounting HDPE sheeting under car (Combined with stainless buttonhead bolts). Much better than rivets.

Yeah, I was looking at this a little more closely after I posted and I think this is definitely the route I'll go. I'm thinking M10 for the battery and motor/trans grounds. and I'll grab some M6s for other stuff too

15 min gearbox swap, pretty crazy lol.

15 minutes? Luxury.

I'll be bobbing the top of my 016. I expect that it won't be the last one in the car sad smiley

See earlier in thread... you cut the top couple bolt holes out of the bellhousing, make it flat relative to horizontal. Allows you to yank the trans without having to move the steering out of the way.

Right, OK, I thought that's what you were referring to.

Frankly, that idea scares the hell out of me. But it's not like I've been hearing stories of people breaking off the bell housing of the motor... HHMmmmm...!

I've done that to at least 3 transmissions in my 4k - haven't lost one yet.

I definitely didn't make a removable section of transmission tunnel to ease transmission swaps in the Lemons car. Nope, Brett did it.

Took the day off yesterday to get something accomplished while it's still warm enough to paint. And wow, 8 hours of chipping, grinding and cleaning was a killer... whoa but progress was made!

After lots of chipping:

Then after lots of grinding (angle grinder with a steel bristle attachment):

And then finally, after two coats of primer:

The process was like, chip for an hour, vacuum, repeat 3 times, grind for an hour, vacuum, repeat, want to die, then clean with simple green, then vacuum, then wipe down again, then wait for it to dry, then paint. It's so easy to eat up a day in just paint prep... yikes. All the vibration material forward of the rear seats has now been removed. That's as far as I'm going for now, remember, drawing a line, trying to actually focus on getting the car going.

Also got my nifty label maker and labels in. I'm not doing the fancy in-line heat-shrink labels because I don't want to spend another season just breaking connectors and making labels. These are already fancy enough:

Going to get the paint coat on tomorrow. Then it's time to start building and stop painting things! thumbs up

No stitch welding?
Half the reason you clean things well--well enough to put paint on ---is so you can do some quick stitchy-stitchy 1/2" weld.. modern car body shells are all thin thin and anything than can make a bodyshell last longer is a mitzvah

That is, of course, assuming the car will be used vigorously and that you are a privateer with limited resources to re-shell constantly.

As ususal, what da fuq do I know?

Hmm... I guess I didn't realize this was something people did on a budget build... but makes sense, it's not like you have to order any fancy things for it, just labor really...

In any case, it's not happening right now. Perhaps sometime in the future of the car.
