Rally Car:
Volvo 244

Ukiah High School Rally Car
May 12, 2015 08:53PM
I have been toying with the idea of building a rally car most of my adult life. The planets are aligning and I am finally in a position to make it happen. I teach Auto Shop in Northern California. I was able to purchase a car for a shop project it is a 1982 volvo 244 turbo. The turbo is shot so the plan is to pull the engine and put a NA 2.3L in it instead. Later a turbo may be added... But for now the plan is to keep it mellow. Currently the car has been gutted, sunroof removed, turbo engine has been pulled and wiring harness has been swapped to an 1983 with a b23. Kids are doing some of the work and I am the wip cracker, volvo expert and solitary person with determination to see it through. Plans are general maintenance, roll cage (and other things for the rules). Next stage is suspension upgrades, steering quickener, and eventually LSD, transmission, and turbo. Looking forward to getting some expert feedback from you all so have at it!

That's awesome!
It'll be nice having Mendocino Rally literally in your backyard.

Um, hi. I'm the local scrutineer. I'm also the exec officer for the Mendocino Rally. I'm also somewhat familiar with Volvos.

If you have extra slave labor, I could use some for two of my Volvo-related projects.

Nice! I was hoping to get some insight into this rally business but had no idea I would be bumping shoulders with the scrutineer! I have some questions for you!

Definitely willing to help out with your Volvo projects.

I have a group of kids that are stoked and I would love for them to see other Volvo rally projects because right now they think I am a weirdo because I like Volvos...

I had no idea there was a rally here until I started looking into building a car! I am hoping it will be our debut in a year or so.

Today we pulled the engine out of the 1983 to put into the rally car. Replaced the Rear main seal and took the flywheel to be surfaced. Rewired the overdrive switch... shocker!

Ummm yeah... my shop teacher, the last of a breed in my neck of the woods (a shop teacher that knew how to weld) was into volvos... I think I got into rally because of him. At the minumum I learned that straight lines and big rear tires were not the only way to have fun... oh, and you can build cool sheet out of "big garbage" day.

Cool on ya!

Nice dude. This has been needing to happen for a long time. Whatever it takes to get the kids to get excited - especially if it's showing them the awesomeness that is the 240.

Yes please! I (and the students) would love to see your rig.

Replaced the rear main and installed new pilot bearing. Picked up the flywheel so hopefully we can stick the engine tomorrow!

Nick, I envy your army. Also, this is rad. thumbs up

As far as convincing them that your not weird picking one video on youtube of a volvo flying down gravel is simply too damn difficult. So punch in "volvo 240 rally" or "f cup volvo" and watch a few. They'll come around.

Albert knows his stuff so id suggest taking his advice. Looks like you got the right idea starting off, keeping it simple and getting some events in is way more important than having the best of everything. It can always be upgraded down the road or on the second car if the first dies!

Have fun!

A vid of tero should get you and your crew fired up!

Great video Eric, thank you!

Flywheel is on, new clutch is on. Engine installed. The 83 engine harness won't fit through the firewall so now I need to swap the plate from the 83 into the rally car.

I watched all of project binky and am amazed!

One day...
