stretching an axle

anyone have any good ghetto methods of stretching a dana 1030 so i can get the ring out? i know there's some crazy volvo tool out there, but that's not happening. bolt on some rotors backwards and wail on them? i have no idea.

and as an adendum, rockauto has 1030 R&P sets for 125 bucks. 4.88! bearing kit was 60.

I always used a prybar to pull and whack the bottom of the diff housing with a hammer to shock it out a little. No risk of permanently distorting a housing from being a doofus with the spreader tool.

Unless the bearings are worn, then you get a catcher's mitt and grab it as it falls out when you remove the bolts.

I'm with Pete. I've never used the spreader thingie. Just two pry bars, put them into the cutout in the diff. Preload them and give the outer case a love tap with a mallet.

ok, so that worked and the carrier is now out. took a piece of angle iron and driled two holes to match the flange bolt pattern and used that to get the pinion nut off.

now i can't get the flange off. tried prying around it, whacking it with a mallet, lashing two huge prybars to it and jumping on them... quarter stick may come next.

anyone? the tool for doing it shown in the dana manual looks completely indecipherable. i am at a loss.

A standard 2 or 3 prong puller will work. Autozone or O'Rizzles usually has a puller they'll loan out. I have one at my shop that should work if you need it.
Let me know.

so my favorite local mom and pop parts shop, radke's had gone out of business. since 1933 they were helping the locals. so i couldn't borrow a puller from them, and baxter doesn't rent. so i bought a puller and it stripped out first try. ha! i will beat this flange... after i get my money back from baxter.
