I am officially lost for all of Page 4. Not an engineer. Not trying to be one. I was a Marine Biology major, guys, and I failed out of college because the fools where I attended thought Biologists needed Calculus 3 to get their degree. So I'm not even going to try to figure that stuff behind us out.

Get a clutch pack LSD, Check! Once I pick my final transmission choice based on gearing and final drive; I will see who manufactures one for that application. I won't need to know anything more until something breaks on it, or in it.

The dog ears on the Kass and the friction plates in the Grippa are identical looking to old bmw and porsche stuff. They manage 25% locker with just two.

Now if only I could unlock my 3 plate setup...

The Porsche, bigger BMW, Volvo 240, Ford Sierra Cosworth, Saab99 and 900 and the "Atlas" axle for higher powered MkII Escorts in Group 4 are all what's called the ZF "006" family...Good diff. I would say my "must lusted for" diff...
And they have---unlike the Gripper or the 3J, squre root spline form..So its the old way. Unlike the KAZZ though, the plates are nice and thick so the tendancy to fracture and shed ears is greatly reduced..
True happiness is found in the Ford units which began the trend towards steeper ramp angles and more self-locking effect..
Most had 45 degree or 90 degree included angle in the pressure rings where the cross-shafts nestle..Ford went to 30 for 60 degree..Mo better. And of course 3 plates and 3 discs per side--alternately stacked.

This place is full of excellent information....
it just goes to shit when peripheral people of noobs come and with their big plans and big ideas and their own shit talk, bragging, defensiveness and anger.

"as you'd have others do unto you, so shall ye do unto them"
Some old wise guy said that.

I know I've asked... nicely, not so nicely, and angrily; to stay off of My build thread unless you have positive, informational, or constructive posts. Every one of your useless efforts only wastes space in the end, when members are perusing for the actual information which hopefully will be located within once finished.

Every single post on this thread is packed with good useful and insightful information.
The problem is you..
you come here with a already done plan--bad sign. You state your plan based on nobody know what. EVERY single person so far has been generous enough to try and make clear that every single thing you've bought so far and every single thing you are posting that you have bought and plan to buy and plan to do is beyond belief silly and pointless..this:

Quote

Mk. 4 BBK from the Jetta GLi/20thAE/337 cars. Actually uses the same caliper, but has a larger caliper bracket that allows for bigger rotors, and is strengthend over the standard piece. This gives me 1.2" bigger rotors, and also allows me to keep my stock calipers as spares.

Set of four Ronal 17" x 7.5" wheels from an Audi TT. Needed to clear the bigger brakes.

Smoked Mk. 4 tail light housings (Stocks had been stripped prior to sale).

Mk. 4 Upper rear interior stress bar, between shock towers.

Momo Millennium steering wheel, with quick release hub.

Kamei badgeless grill (needed replacement from the initial accident).

I was also able to work a deal for the already mounted EuroJet FMIC, which the shop was going to remove and sell on their eBay site. $150.00 for an $800 retail kit,

and this:
Quote

so I could get a reliable 250-275 Hp to my wheels without modifying the engine to a point where I would lose reliability. I also get a quick ratio rack, a 6 speed tranny, aluminum lower control arms, larger, vented rear brakes, a better subframe, and other great upgrades

For SCCA type rallycross, every siggle this above is rediculous and that is a very kind description.

Then there's this
You brag and bray and write this:
Quote

I've built almost a half dozen IT cars for myself and my teammates over the course of the 90's. All of those cars with the exception of one, started with Autopower competition roll bars, and then progressed using their weld in cage kits, designed to work with their bars. Those were all VW Rabbit GTI's. Mark II Golf GTi's, and BMW 2002's.

Also in the 90's, at the Porsche performance shop I worked at,

So you've buiolt a bunch of cars and worked at a Porsche performance shop..
Ah good so you're just tragicvally misguided, not totally ignorant.

We thought.

And then when you get a full page of excellent photos about why you want a specific diff of a specific type, you cry that you don't understand a thing because you aren't a technical person...
You are a biology major..
Wot da fuq?

I even made a big effort to help you understand what you clearly don't understand about DISCUSSION... I'll post it again since you haven't yet grasped this essential point about this place and the intent of this place.

Read it again---along with this http://www.rallyanarchy.com/phorum/read.php?8,41104

EVERYBODY here is saying the same thing which sum total is: Everything you have planned out is wrong and wrong headed... We have done this stuff..
Thomas is no transitioning from a couple of years of playing grass-o-cross to rally,
Pete has done this grass-o-cross stuff for decades and allegedly good at the driving part and his record at being thoughtful and smart at mechanical things is excellent..

This place was founded to be a place to DISCUSS like ADULTS......car builds and driving ideas, it was founded by 5-6 guys who all are very good analytical minds--not just about jerking off or onto cars...we founders were none of us by any strectch materialists or consumer types, nor were/are any hipsters or trustafarians, just clear thinking guys who have feet on the ground and a good backbone....and who can argue their points without tantrums and screaming.

It was not started as a place merely to be a place for guys to show off what they think is their cool shit... Plenty of places elsewhere for that. (Edit: you obviously think this is Facebook. Maybe you would be happier bullshitting and posting "look at me cool shit" there?)

So maybe I was or we were wrong with what we envisaged, but discussion is not some tame OOOOoooo . Ahhhhhh at a series of photos or words.

Let me help you with what discussion means in the best sense

discussion (n.) Look up discussion at Dictionary.com
mid-14c., "examination, investigation, judicial trial," from Old French discussion
"discussion, examination, investigation, legal trial," from Late Latin
discussionem (nominative discussio) "examination, discussion," in classical Latin, "a shaking," from discussus, past participle of discutere "strike asunder, break up," from dis- "apart" (see dis-) + quatere "to shake" (see quash). Meaning "a talking over, debating" in English first recorded mid-15c. Sense evolution in Latin appears to have been from "smash apart" to "scatter, disperse," then in post-classical times (via the mental process involved) to "investigate, examine," then to "debate."

How about "discuss"?

discuss (v.) Look up discuss at Dictionary.com
mid-14c., "to examine, investigate," from Latin discuss-, past participle stem of discutere "to dash to pieces, agitate," in Late Latin and Vulgar Latin also "to discuss, investigate" (see discussion). Meaning "examine by argument, debate" is from mid-15c. Related: Discussed; discussing.

So again, you post questions, post photos here THEY WILL BE DISCUSSED..
Pretty simple..
If you feel compelled to whine and complain, the solution is obvious...

Again, you have wasted more space on a thread for a build not being done in your shop, and not using your components. Get off if you have nothing positive or constructive to post. Stop wasting bandwidth. Stop posting useless diatribe.

Every other member, even if posting constructive criticism, or straight out questions to my thoughts and actions has been constructive, productive, and polite.

You are the exception.

Moderator(s): Please remove any post from this thread by John which does not actually contain constructive criticism, or useful information which will lead to the forward momentum of this build.

The extent of Johns' knowledge is without question or argument. Too bad he has no social skills, as he could actually be a useful, positive addition to everything trying to be done here. Sadly, on many threads located within this website, on almost every post; he is nothing but arrogant, pompous, rude, and completely unacceptable in nature.

If you haven't noticed, John's technical posts seem to be drumming up more discussion than anyone else's. He has provided you with directly beneficial information (Diff, Wheel size, Brake size, etc). And called you out when you come off as a bit ignorant and gloaty, just part of this forum.

CHILLAX Dan!!

If you check below your incomplete real name you will see we are all moderators...

I just don't comprehend how people can ask for advice, then when advice is given by knowledgeable people with real experience it can provoke such a reaction.

I only posted the diff info link because I could see earlier in the thread the mention of a potentially turbo powered 275bhp FWD car with an open diff on grass. That's plain crazy talk.

Regarding safety and a cage for grassocross use, a standard Mk4 platform vehicle is a seriously strong and safe shell to be sitting in when compared to earlier Mk1,2 and 3 vehicles.
An un-caged mk4 shell is probably safer than a caged Mk1 as it has properly designed crush zones to absorb and dissipate impacts.
