Secondary transport to Someday Rally Car Opinions

Since we moved to the farm 40 mins from town we find that the wife is now using the truck more often than not and both vehicles are getting near the end of their low cost of ownership phase. Basically we pay them out in 4-5 years then run them to about 10yrs where the possibility of getting a major dollar repair goes up. We are probably going to go with another 2 yr old low mileage Diesel 3/4 or 1 ton (yes it tows regularly at max GCWR) which leads me to the reason for this post, I will likely buy a car to replace the outgoing suv.

What under $20k new to 2yrs old 4dr 2wd car today would you buy to turn into a rally car 10+yrs from now?
I don't really have any brand loyalty, I like Mk2 VWs but they don't build anything all that enticing now.

brz. Inline rwd gearbox makes for easier swapping down the road, and being a j160 box it already has options not to mention 2-6 stock ratios are pretty good. The car is related to toyota which opens up engine possibilities (beams) if you don't want to stick with the flat 4. I think toyota diff which may make for easy swaps/ easy to find ring and pinions. Also reasonable weight and fun to drive now.

Forgot to put the 4dr part, car seat friendly....
Anyone have any experience with the new 1.5l turbo Hondas? Only issue I can see is that it appears there's no manual trans available but thinking I must be missing something.

I'd probably go Fiesta.

But then I also bought a MKII VW rally car 10 years ago...so I'm a fan of having a car that's common at events.

In the 20K range, you can start looking at Mk. 5 and 6 Golfs and GTI's. 4 door option. Small turbo 4 with 5 and 6 speed options. In another 10 years, more than enough of them will have aftermarket parts support. If you wanted to go up to 4wd, you could even get a high mileage R32 at this point in time. They definitely will last 10+ years, and have proven to be good high mileage, reliable cars.

select stitch-welding
some sorta paint..
cost maybe the same

10 times easier to keep going--for example to check gearbox oil level--pull a plug and stick finger in..New nazi vergeltungwaffenmachinen: you are not authorized to check gearbox oil level Steng Verboten.!

Immeasurably more fun.

id go hyundai genesis or fiesta st. both will have mad junkyard support in 10years 1 more than other for rally bits. with the wrc Yaris on the horizon???eh???mmm no to hard to make fast. not alotta 4dr 2wd awsome out there that isn't econo driven. honda civic si?

If you are going to look at the non-ST fiestas I think the one to have is the 1.0L 3cyl turbo.

I'm not sure teh 3 cyl turbo is available in Canada.

the new civic earth whateva is ok, surprising for what it is and sure to have r and d thown relentlessy at it to make it fast by hondaphiles so notta bad ideaer. lotsa parts cars and for a daily i really lkie the looks and styling inner and outter. the kid that rents my upstairs suite out has one and makes me drive all his cars. if i fit better id drive one
