I now have a relatively rust free Volvo 240, a B230 in good shape, and a Bell housing adapter for a T5 trans! And $2 to my name.

So far the only plan I really got is to make it not a worthless pile of crap to prove the haters who think buying a not running car is stupid (Which is everyone except my close friends LOL)

I'm gonna try and see if the motor turns via breaker bar and if it does I'm gonna change the oil and filter, put some dry gas in it, then try and jump it. After I get it running, it's gonna need brakes and bearings and stuff too, but I want to upgrade them, and the rest of the front end bits too

Mine had sat for two and a half years when I got it. Put a new battery in it and drained old gas, put in some fresh gas with a nice heaping of Seafoam and it started. Did all the maintenance stuff, oil, fluids, belts, plugs, wires, rotor, etc and now she runs like a champ. Except for I think I need a new fan clutch...

Regardless, good luck and welcome to the club.

I wholeheartedly approve this message!

Have to retire my Subaru wagon this month due to tin-worm and mechanical decrepitude; while the 850 GLT sedan I inherited from my MIL does pretty OK for commuting, I need a backup car/pack mule for dump runs and light towing duty. Which is either going to be some beater pickup truck or a RWD Volvo wagon.

The XRatty seems to go 900 miles between $500 repairs, and even with only one winter under its belt, I struggle to stay ahead of the rust.

Eager to see the progress!

Nice! Glad to see this and look forward to your progress, just make sure you can feed yourself man!!! At the rate my repairs are going you'll have this thing on stages before I have mine back together!

Also try and hold back the flood for a bit. As tempting as it is to jump in with the angle grinder and start given er atleast get it running and running well, then drive it some before really diving into it. You'll be thankful you did. Best of luck!

Read what Eric said, then reflect, then read it again, then reflect some more. Then if necessary read it again and hit yourself in the head while reading to drive it home.

Seriously, listen to the man.

So I took the old battery out and hooked up the posts to my dad's car and tried to jump it. It cranks over, but wouldn't start. I put some of that Lucas fuel stuff in it, but it's the original gas, so I dunno. I was thinking take apart the intake, then test it for spark and go from there?

Don't think..Worse thing you can do..
Read.
You have a Haynes manual?
They have simple step by step troubleshooting trees..
Do it step by step..Don't take anything apart.
Get 3-4 cans of HEET gas line dier, dump it it and swish it around by jumping up and down on the bumpers and shoving the car..

You MIGHT consider draining the tank---there is a drain screw on some 240s.
so before you do a lotta silly things, get some fresh gas in it, charrge the battery fully, clean the battery terminals with a batter terminal brush and THEN try..
Maybe if you fell compelled to DO something, whip the plugs out, clean them and gap them..
(In the book for instrucciones)
Check water level in battery
check water in exapmasion tank
check oil..
Basic "Stage Zero" shit...

But don't take shit apart.

Get a Haynes manual. We got one for Wodewick "Fly-half" for $3 off Amazon.

Dude it's retarded I've had this Volvo 240 Haynes manual for YEARS right and the last week or two I've been reading it in preparation but now that I have the damn car I can't find it anywhere.

EDIT: Literally 2 seconds after I posted this I found it! I'm whooped from work but TO THE SHOP!!!!
